Recorded live at various venues and festivals, including Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, this set includes performances by modern blues performers Corey Harris, Taj Mahal, Shemekia Copeland, Guy Davis, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Phil Wiggins.

This CD is a tribute to traditional (true) blues by a number of current black blues artists, including Taj Mahal and most of the younger artists here like Guy Davis, Alvin Youngblood Hart and Corey Harris have followed the path that Taj has been blazing since the late 1960s. The collection is made up of live recordings at venues including the Lincoln Centre, the House Of Blues, Washington DC's Howard Theatre and the Rams Head in Annapolis, Maryland. For me the standout track is Shemekia Copeland singing "Bring Your Fine Self Home" (a song covered by her father Johnny) backed by Hart, Harris and harmonica player Phil Wiggins. Although Shemekia normally sings in an electric setting her stunning voice completely dominates this track, which sags slightly during the instrumental section, despite Wiggins excellent harmonica. The final track Robert Johnson's "Ramblin' On My Mind" features the same players but the sound wasn't quite as good and the vocals are shared out between them. Also the opening track has the guys (minus Shemekia) doing the over-played "Hoochie Coochie Man", which sounds good in this loose, more acoustic version - with Phil Wiggins harp bridging the gap between Chicago and the Delta. Harris, Davis and Hart are all fine players and all turn in good performances of relatively well-known songs like Blind Willie Johnson's "Motherless Children Have A Hard Time" and Sleepy John Estes' "Everybody Got To Change Sometime" but don't really demonstrate that originality and creativity that they have showed elsewhere in their own recordings. The kind of qualities that Taj Mahal demonstrates in spades with his two performances from the Rams Head, both of which sound excellent - like studio recordings. I would have loved to have heard more of Shemekia, who's singing is really special and takes the two songs that she appears on to a different level. I'd also have liked to have heard more tracks by the guys playing together, rather than their more usual solo performances. However, it was great to hear Phil WIggins again since his old partner John Cephas died, he is a truly stunning blues harmonica player.
