Valentina Lisitsa, a stunning virtuosic pianist, has become the first classical musician to achieve fame via YouTube, emulating Justin Bieber s achievement in the pop world. Having amassed an impressive 43 million views on her channel, Valentina is now in the unique position of going straight to one of the world s leading concert venues for her central London debut. The self-made virtuoso who has achieved all of this on her own without the help of a manager or promoter has now leapfrogged even the world s most revered and long-established pianists and thrown the traditional concert hall route out of the window. Having already booked the 5000-seater Royal Albert Hall in which to perform, Valentina was today in London four weeks ahead of her June 19th date to undertake her own concert promotion. As a thank you to her current online fans Valentina is determined to make the concert a fully digital and interactive experience by inviting fans to vote online to decide what she will play and by fully streaming the concert live via YouTube for those who can t travel to London. This level of online digital interaction is a first for a solo classical concert.

Having won a receptive audience by posting videos on YouTube, pianist Valentina Lisitsa has taken the next logical steps for a self-promoting star: booking the Royal Albert Hall for a solo recital of pieces by Rachmaninov, Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven, and Scriabin, and getting Decca to record it. Naturally, Rachmaninov's Etude-Tableau, "Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf," is included, because Lisitsa's video performance of this piece started her rise to fame, and it was a clever idea to make listeners associate a particularly flashy and fun piece with her style of playing. Lisitsa is a dynamic performer who plays with great speed and volatility, rather in the manner of Martha Argerich, and her interpretations are full of teasing rubato, hectic attacks, and surging and diminishing dynamics, all characteristic of the Romantic individualism that is Lisitsa's strong suit. She is at her best in short but loud character pieces that require a show of force, and less impressive in softer pieces where her lack of sublety is more apparent. The inclusion of Beethoven's "Moonlight" Sonata was a mistake because it reveals her limitations in handling Classical style and a two-dimensional understanding of Beethoven's expressions, resulting in a fairly mechanical performance. Even so, Lisitsa is an entertainer, rather than an aesthete, and her showmanship dominates this album so much that to expect anything else is pointless. Decca's sound is big and expansive, so the piano isn't lost in the Royal Albert Hall's space, but its presence isn't immediate.

Review by Blair Sanderson, Allmusic.com

The Ukrainian pianist Valentina Lisitsa has built a huge audience through YouTube postings of her solo performances.

Her ingenious self-promotion has brought her sell-out solo concerts and now a proper recording contract, this Decca debut a guaranteed chart-topper. It helps that she is gifted: there's an admirable lightness of touch and appreciation of rhythmic flow to her "Für Elise", and her negotiation of Liszt's "Un Sospiro" is captivating. But this programme – chosen by internet fans – is too much like a Greatest Hits of classical piano and listeners will likely already have their own definitive versions of standards like the Chopin Nocturnes and the "Moonlight Sonata", with which Lisitsa's may struggle to compete.

Review by Andy Gill, Independent.co.uk

Valentina Lisitsa made her Albert Hall debut on 19 June. This speedily released disc is the result. The Ukrainian pianist has established her reputation via 45 million hits and 55,000 subscribers on YouTube. It's a novel way of forging a classical career and so far the most interesting aspect. This recital disc of short piano pops proves Lisitsa's technical skill rather than the potential depth or reach of her musicality. She opens, in reckless mood, with Rachmaninov's Prelude in G Minor, then settles into an elegant Für Elise (Beethoven), a light-fingered, alert La campanella (Liszt), a "Moonlight" Sonata with an oddly heavy left hand, and so on in similar vein. Those who like her will like it. Let's see what happens next.
