The U.S. Steinway & Sons label, associated with the venerable piano maker, has embarked on a series of handsomely designed, well-annotated releases that often explore undeservedly neglected repertory. The piano sonatas of Viktor Ullmann, who was gassed at Auschwitz in 1944, fit that description. Ullmann has been featured mostly in collections of compositions from the Nazis' "model" concentration camp at Terezin (Theresienstadt), where Jews were permitted some forms of artistic expression and where he wrote the last three of the seven sonatas heard here. But it is becoming clear that Ullmann's is a distinctive voice that deserves to be treated individually. The present recording by pianist Jeanne Golan is obviously a labor of passion; she went so far as to interview a 108-year-old survivor of Terezin about Ullmann's work and personality. The seven sonatas date from 1936, when Ullmann (who was interested in philosophy and art as well) decided to devote himself to composition full time, to 1944. The slow movement of the first sonata is dedicated to Mahler, and the whole thing suggests what might have happened if Mahler had written a short piano sonata. The next three sonatas show the influence of both Bartók and Schoenberg's atonality; the diversity of the language is welded together by the strictly classical three-movement form, with fugues in several of the finales. Probably the most moving works are the final three sonatas, which dispense with the three-movement form and seem more personal in nature. The Piano Sonata No. 5 fuses Schoenberg (who was Ullmann's patron early in his career) and Slavic folk styles, while the final two sonatas seem defiant affirmations of anti-Nazi identity: the sixth sonata is infused with Gershwin and with jazz, while the seventh uses Jewish folk music and, in a staggering fugal finale, fuses it with the B-A-C-H motif, a Lutheran chorale, and a Hussite hymn. The album closes with a "Totentanz" minuet that seems a bit too pat, but this is a recording that faithfully reflects the awful times in which the music originated.Tracks CD 1:James Manheim @ AllMusic.com
