Whenever Udo Dirkschneider and his U.D.O. come up with a “special” release, you already know that it is indeed going to be special and that we’re not dealing with a way to make some easy money. In honour of the band’s 25th anniversary the German legend and his companions have come up with a new compilation album.U.D.O. official homepage
Was the ‘Metallized’ compilation, which was released as a celebration of the band’s twentieth anniversary - a collection of classic U.D.O. tracks handpicked by the fans, for ‘Celebrator’ the band has come with a collection of rare tracks that were previously only available on EPs and singles, or songs Udo contributed to as guest. However, the songs taken from the EPs and singles are not simply copy/pasted and all appear with a new mix. The difference is in the details, but if you listen carefully you will hear the difference with the original versions. Besides that we get many songs that were previously released as Japanese bonus tracks only, and also these tracks have been remixed. With ‘Tallyman’, ‘The Silencer’ and ‘Artificialized’ we even get three previously unreleased tracks! These songs come from the recording sessions of the two last studio albums and are each utter U.D.O. classics.
The choice for duets and guest appearance has fell on the beautiful ‘Dancing With An Angel’ (feat. Doro), ‘They Only Come Out At Night’ (feat. Lordi), a cover version of Accept’s ‘Head Over Heels’ by Hammerfall with Udo on guest vocals, and Judas Priest’s ‘Metal Gods’, taken from tribute album to the British metal gods. One of the most interesting tracks in my opinion is the fantastic version of Steppenwolf’s ‘Born To Be Wild’ that Udo recorded in 1983 with British NWOBHM legends Raven. Truly fantastic to hear this song again after many years.
‘Celebrator’ has become a double-CD with 25 rare tracks, guaranteeing almost two hours of pure metal festivity. Due to the fact that the bigger deal of the tracks are not simply taken from the originals and – as already mentioned – the band has delivered remixes, the fans who do have their original are not being “robbed”, and those who have missed those releases now have access to some of those tracks as well. And this way everyone wins! Ok, the acoustic version of Accept’s ‘Balls To The Wall’ also appeared on ‘Metallized’, but that is no reason to complain.
