Trio Globo has crafted a totally original voice in contemporary acoustic jazz. With roots in jazz, classical and sacred music, rhythmic influences derived from travels in six continents, and a combustible spontaneity, cellist Eugene Friesen (Paul Winter Consort), pianist and master harmonica player Howard Levy (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Kenny Loggins, Paquito d’Rivera), and percussionist Glen Velez (Paul Winter Consort, Steve Reich) epitomize the quintessential group for the 21st century. They are true originals re-inventing their instruments in new music both personal and global.

The idea of World infused Jazz may not sound promising but the three members of Trio Globo have created something truly special with their newest album, Steering by the Stars. Eugene Frinsen is excellent with the cello as evident from the albums opening title track and carries through all thirteen songs. Howard Levy skills on the flute are exceeded only by his poweress with a harmonica and Glen Velez's percussion work is objectively magical. Each one of these tracks offers a sound that is unique in its own way but also equally outstanding - including the impromptu session "Three Musicians" as well as the pair of covers from Woody Guthrie and John Coltrane.

I'm quite new to Trio Globo, but I've found that they've released quite a few albums in the past…All I can say is that it definitely shows. These are seasoned musicians who have been playing and honing their instruments and skills as an ensemble for quite some time. They play with one homogenous sound that spans many different 'worldly' styles and the mix is fantastic. There is so much in this CD that I can't begin to break it down in simplified terms…Its a breathtaking, emotional journey of the anti-genre that is world-jazz. I definitely recommend it.
