Third studio album from the ex-Spandau Ballet singer. Here Hadley loses the 80's synth pop sound and dives head first into swing where his powerful voice sounds as good as ever. A project close to his heart that he's been working on for some time and hopes that his choice of songs, and vocal and musical arrangements, will challenge the normal format of current swing and delight not only his existing fans, but also some new ones.
I was not a Tony Hadley fan before I bought this album. I love swing music and I was very amused when Robbie Williams and Westlife recorded their tribute albums. Tony Hadley knocks them out of the park. This is not another rock star saluting Sinatra and Frank's era - there's no famous Frank track on the CD. "Passing Strangers" is not a pastiche of Rat Pack like performances. Hadley more than matches the solid arrangements and musical direction; he puts his stamp on both the old and new songs. His voice is superb on "Too Close for Comfort" and "The Mood I'm In": he gives real feeling to the dated lyrics of "Wives and Lovers". My only criticism is "Just A Gigolo": why did he have to follow the old Louis Prima medley of that song and "I Ain't Got Nobody", just as David Lee Roth did back in the 80s? But even that track is enjoyable. This is a wonderful album that 80s nostalgics and fans of big band music will relish.Review by Angus T. Cat, Amazon.co.uk
I have always loved Tony Hadley's voice and was a huge fan of Spandau Ballet in my teen years. How delighted I was to find this CD, as this is my favorite style of music. Tony's voice is absolutely perfect for this genre of music. This is a really interesting and delightful collection of songs that include selections from the Great American Songbook, original songs, and other pop classics. I truly hope he will record another album like this, and maybe even choose to spotlight some more songs from the Great American Songbook by Porter, Gershwin, or Mercer. Tony's interpretation of Mercer's "I Wanna Be Around" and Rodgers and Hart's "Bewtiched, Bothered and Bewildered" are a couple of my favorite tracks on the album. He also does a fine job with Cole Porter's "Love For Sale". Fain's classic "Tender is the Night" sounds like it was made just for Tony's gorgeous voice! Tony gives Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle" a much happier and fresher interpretation than the original song. Two of my favorite tracks on the album, "Star" and "Leaves of Love" were co-written by Tony. They are both really beautiful songs. "Sea of Love" has a really dreamy, bluesey feel to it, and it's my new favorite rendition of that song.
Don't miss this wonderful CD. Tony's voice is even more beautiful than ever, and I really hope he'll treat us to another collection like this.Review by Southern Belle, Amazon.com
