GREATEST LOVE SONGS (Hip-O Records), released January 28, 2003, collects 17 of the hit songs and fan favorites from the swingin' '60s and early '70s – eight of them U.S. Top 40s – that set the emotion in motion.

As a new generation of fans discovers him – whether through his animated image seducing Marge Simpson on "The Simpsons," the stunning international success of his 1999 album RELOAD (which went to #1 in the U.K. and throughout Europe) or his latest album, 2002's MR. JONES (a collaboration with Wyclef Jean not yet issued in the U.S.) – his GREATEST LOVE SONGS focuses on the songs and voice of the man who made wearing tight leather pants really hot and really cool.

In 1964, Jones signed with Decca U.K. but his first single flopped. His second was a sensation. "It's Not Unusual" was deemed so boldly sexual that it was banned by the BBC. Only when a pirate offshore radio station played the song did it become a #1 hit in the U.K. The following year, it charted at #10 in the U.S.

His success as a crooner amidst rock 'n' roll was astonishing for this son of a Welsh coalminer. In 1969, ABC signed him to the largest contract to that date between a television network and a singing star – and the variety series "This Is Tom Jones" catapulted him to icon status. In just a few years, Jonescould claim 10 consecutive gold albums.

Along with "It's Not Unusual," his Top 40 hits on GREATEST LOVE SONGS from 1964 to 1971, when the series went off the air, are "(It Looks Like) I'll Never Fall In Love Again" (#6, gold), "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" (#5, gold), "With These Hands" (#27), "Love Me Tonight" (#13), "Help Yourself" (#35), "Can't Stop Loving You" (#25) and "I (Who Have Nothing)" (#14).

GREATEST LOVE SONGS also includes lesser-charters "I'm Coming Home" and "Till" as well as the tracks "My Foolish Heart," "Hello Young Lovers," "When I Fall In Love," "Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart," "Why Can't I Cry," "Let It Be Me" and "Let There Be Love."

Though his hits receded, he continued to record and his concerts continued to sell-out. In the '90s, a revival of '60s pop culture returned him to hipness, where he remains, still swingin'.

Hip-O's 2004 budget-line Tom Jones release Greatest Love Songs gathers 17 popular romantic themes taken from the balladeer's late-'60s/early-'70s catalog on Parrot Records. While the disc contains several classic moments, including "It's Not Unusual," "Help Yourself," "I (Who Have Nothing)," and "Love Me Tonight," the selection is too haphazard to make the collection a good introduction. For instance, why wasn't "She's a Lady" included? Nevertheless, it's not bad as a sampler, but The Best of Tom Jones on Polygram is the recommended set.

Hip-O Records presents the power and presence of Tom Jones, with his latest album "Greatest Love Songs", as we hear the legendary crooner weave his spell with some classic love songs. This son of a Welsh coal miner came up the hard way, with his very own television show in the late '60s. Tom sets the mood with emotion that his husky voice conveys with each articulate lyric.

Just think, seventeen selections focusing on one of his big hits "IT'S NOT UNUSUAL", from the 1965 self titled album…where were you when you first heard this one…can you believe this was banned by the BBC. Another favorite is "(IT LOOKS LIKE)I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN", how many of us have felt that way once or twice in our lives, Tom gives a haunting rendition that stays with you. A very big hit for Eddie Fisher was "WITH THESE HANDS", and "I'll never let you go and I will sing to you", Tom gives one of his best performances. With "HELLO YOUNG LOVERS", he swings lightly with a Nelson Riddle arrangement. This Victor Young composition"WHEN I FALL IN LOVE", is the classic Nat "King" Cole hit from a long running career of standards that made us feel every word. Just "HELP YOURSELF", to my lips and my arms, then let's really start to live…this says it all. Love is the thing that the whole wide world needs plenty of "WITHOUT LOVE(THERE IS NOTHING)", words to live by, specially in these trying times. You are my reason to live, all I own I would give as Tom sings "TILL", from the Roger Williams Songbook, as we look back to the '50s…Mr. Jones sings this from the heart, just in time for Valentines Day.

My own personal stand outs are "MY FOOLISH HEART", another Victor Young composition with lyrics from Ned Washington, the night is like a lovely tune, beware my foolish heart…there's a line between love and fascination…the words grab you immediately, and Tom carefully sets the stage for each syllable. One can reach into the Tom Jones bag of hits and close this review with "LOVE ME TONIGHT", lyrics rise like smoke in the night with "please let my stay, don't send me away, hold me now my heart is breaking, something is burning inside and cannot be denied"…Tom ends this on a high note and holds the same for almost 15 seconds…it could have been longer, gotta love it!

Hip-O has outdone itself with the help of some talented people Bill Levenson (producer), Pat Lawrence & Dana Smart (executive producers), Ellen Fitton (mastered by)…and of course the man who stole our hearts and gave so much of himself…TOM JONES!
