Product Description: The Tin Angel is now the common name for Odetta & Larry's only album, a collection of all their recordings, originally released in 1954 as "Odetta And Larry".
The album is a collection of recordings of Odetta and Larry Mohr from 1953-54; it was partially recorded live at San Francisco's Tin Angel nightclub, but was not called "The Tin Angel" on any '50s releases. The 1993 CD re-release, however, did have that name, and contained six extra tracks, recorded in March 1954.
Like much of Odetta's early work, "The Tin Angel" combines traditional songs (e.g. spirituals) with blues covers. It is often only credited as an Odetta solo album, perhaps because she went on to have the most successful career.

Reviews: - by Richie Unterberger (AMG) - Although the 1993 CD version of this album is credited to Odetta and titled The Tin Angel, it's actually a reissue of a Fantasy LP credited to Odetta & Larry, which bore the slightly different title The Tin Angel Presents Odetta & Larry. That original LP had 13 tracks recorded in 1953 and 1954, some of them live at the Tin Angel club in San Francisco, with Larry Mohr contributing some banjo and harmony and lead vocals, though Odetta was the more prominent presence. This source of confusion duly noted, this is pretty much an Odetta album in most respects, as she takes a considerably larger part of the vocal duties on a set of traditional folk material including such standards as "John Henry," "Rock Island Line," and "Old Cotton Fields at Home," as well as some blues and spirituals, plus a good version of Woody Guthrie's "The Car-Car Song." Odetta's stirring vocal style is pretty fully formed on this, the first group of her recordings in wide distribution, as is her ability to emit bluesy grunts, as you can hear on "John Henry." Mohr's vocals (he takes unaccompanied lead on "Old Blue") and banjo are comparatively bland, but they're not much of a distraction from Odetta, who's definitely the main feature. The 1993 CD reissue adds six tracks, including some very popular folk revival tunes in "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands," "Wade in the Water," and "Another Man Done Gone."

- amazon.com customer - What can I say, I don't know a lot about music, but this album rocks, plain and simple. I don't know what other words I can use to describe it: rich, beautiful, humorous at times, soulful, intense; music from two people who sound like they wouldn't want to be doing anything else. "Old Cotton Fields" will make you wish your stereo's volume could go higher, "Old Blue" makes you stop what you're doing to listen to Larry solo, and "I Was Born About 10,000 Years Ago" (like many other songs on the album) shows the two complimenting each other nothing short of perfectly. The only drawback is some of that ol' analogue hiss, but it doesn't interfere with Odetta and Larry's strong vocals and rhythmic strumming/picking styles. This was one of the best CD purchases I've made in a long time–if I could, I'd send it to you all today.
