Think Floyd " H O P E " is one of the most fantastic Floydian albums I've ever heard. "HOPE" is a work of genius!! I can't say enough about it! I can't stop listening to it! I can't take it off my CD player! Think Floyd are more than extremely talented, and Tony Red, the bass player/singer/songwriter, is truly a creative genius. Every Pink Floyd fan owes it to themselves to own a copy of Think Floyd "Hope"! Be prepared for their next release of all original Floydian music, coming Soon!~ Michael Simone
When I first came across the website of the band called Think Floyd, I immediately thought, cover band! But reading on, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that not only do they perform
covers of Pink Floyd songs but they also play original music they have written themselves. But presumably because the band members are all devout Floyd fans, and have been playing Pink Floyd songs for years, their entire style, sound, and writing is patterned after their music idols.
Think Floyd is an English band and they released their debut album "HOPE" on 7th July 1997 (which also happens to be the band's third anniversary). The album consists of 10 original tracks (six vocal and four instrumental) digitally recorded for the best possible sound. It has taken almost a year to complete from writing the tracks to the finished product and, of course, keeping the Floyd influence.
The band has just completed their third year of performing a stunning light show via computer controlled Robo Scanners and color changers, plus surprise effects. Their unique live show, consisting of over two hours of the best Floyd tracks, reproduced to a remarkable likeness, and now they are introducing new original tracks from the their 1st album "HOPE". Their live set includes tracks from Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell .
Very interesting I thought, I'd love to hear new Floydian style music. David's version of Pink Floyd is not really Pink Floyd without Roger. And even so, they haven't put out anything new in many years. And Roger also hasn't put out anything new for many years. So as a Floyd fan, like most other Floyd fans I know, I am starved and yearning for new Floydian music.
So I sent away for a copy of their CD to review for REG. I eagerly awaited the CD, not knowing what to expect, but anticipating it never the less.
When I received the Think Floyd CD, I listened to it over and over and over like I do to every Pink Floyd or Roger Waters album the first time I hear it. I found the album, entitled "Hope," to be quite excellent, and quite impressive.
The band consists of Tony Red - Bass and Vocals, Peter Mizen - Guitar and Vocals, Brian Buell - Keyboards and Effects, Wiggy Whisker - Drums and Vocals, and Lorrain Delvino - Vocals. The CD is 'Produced' by Think Floyd. The album is produced on a 'Red Productions' label, leading one to conclude that the Bassist, Tony Red, is the leader of the band. (As in the real Floyd tradition!) On the front, back and inside covers of the CD, are stage shot photo's of the band in concert. Though the album itself is a studio recording and not a live concert. On the back of the CD is a listing the songs. Nothing fancy here, but the stage show does look impressive.
The song title listing is as follows:
Prologue
Brain Rape
The Circle
If I had Power
Waiting For Inspiration
Scanning For Life
Hope
Home Again
The Long Dream
The CD itself has a picture of a single monochrome head, which reminded me of the Division Bell heads, but turned sideways. Through the head is a light beam, ala the Dark Side of the Moon prism, shooting up and out. To my disappointment however, nowhere in the front cover insert, nor on the CD itself, does it list who wrote the songs! But the biggest disappointment of all is that there is no lyrics sheet!!! The insert lists only the names of the band members and what instrument they play, with a special thanks list, but nothing at all about the band, their history, their concerts, or when the songs were published nor anything about the concept of the album.
True to Floydian form, it seemed clear that "Hope" is meant to be a concept album, but without the lyrics it is difficult to put the songs together into a cohesive theme. The title of the album, "Hope," suggests that hope is the theme of the concept album. But without being able to read the lyrics, it's hard understand the meaning behind each song, and appreciate the flow and nuances of the music, and how the it segue's from one song to another.
The vocals are done by the bassist, the guitarist, and the drummer, however without detailed information about each song, it is impossible to tell who is doing the singing on what song, (except of course for the female vocals). When I initially heard the vocals, my impression was, "is Rick Wright singing on this album?" The first vocal track sounds uncannily like Rick. In fact many of the vocals, and much of the song writing, sounds as if it could have come off "Broken China," Rick Wright's last solo album. But after listening to more of the album I concluded that the vocals sound more like a combination of Rick Wright and David Gilmour on some tracks and uncannily like Roger Waters on others. The vocals and harmonies on this album, are quite impressive.
The song writing is also quite impressive. The writing style seems to be a combination of Waters' Pink Floyd, Gilmour's Pink Floyd, and Waters solo work. They definitely have the Pink Floyd sound. The songs themselves are quite unique and original, though it's hard not to notice the similarity of riffs from many Floyd tunes. The writing is quite good, sounding like a cross between Rick Wright's "Broken China, and Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and "The Division Bell, and Roger Waters' "Amused to Death."
The instrumentation is also quite good, especially the keyboards. The guitarist is no David Gilmour but passes admirably. The engineering and production sound good to adequate, but somewhat dull and lackluster without brightness. Yet for a first solo venture of original material, and without a large financial backing this album is simply fantastic.
However, the name of the band, Think Floyd, does leave something to be desired. I would have hoped that such talented musicians could have come up with something a little more original.
The first song, "Prolog," an instrumental, begins sounding similar to the opening of "Welcome To The Machine," however that is where the similarity ends. It is a heavily layered synthesizer piece. It fades out and then "Brain Rape" begins, with the same cord progression but faster tempo.
"Brain Rape" sounds as if it came directly off Rick Wright's "Broken China", but with more of a Floydian sound. The lyrics are fantastic as is the song. This is one of my favorite songs on the album. Though many of the songs are good so it's hard to pick a favorite.
"The Circle," is next. The vocals sound very similar to David Gilmour. The music sounds like a cross from something on Division Bell , and Gilmour's first solo album Gilmour. The lyrics again are fantastic, as is the song. "If I had Power," is an instrumental. This is actually a prelude to "Waiting for Inspiration," a sort of cross between, Cluster One and The Ballad of Bill Hubbard.
"Waiting for Inspiration," is in such a Roger Waters/Pink Floyd style that it could have come off The Final Cut, or The Wall. The vocals definitely sound Waterseque. The guitars are in the Gilmour slide guitar style.
"Scanning for Life", is again a Roger Waters style piece, only this time it sounds as if it's from the Waters' Amused To Death era. The Waters' sounding vocal style is similar to songs from Amused and KAOS both. From the lyrics about alien visitors, this song would have fit in great on Amused To Death.
"Hope," the title song, may be my favorite song on the album. It is very Gilmouresque Floydian piece and it sounds as if it could have come directly from The Division Bell. The vocals are almost an exact match for Dave's, and the lyrics about an ending relationship are fantastic.
"Home Again," another of my absolute favorites on the album, the style seems that of Wish You Were Here and The Wall, with Gilmour/Waters vocal harmonies. The keyboard and guitar harmony interplay are also great. Yet the writing sounds like that of Rick Wright. The lyrics here again, are superb. "Reprise," an instrumental sounds as if it could have come from The Division Bell, but it seems only a short interlude between songs. It is very soft and mellow, but it is quite a good instrumental.
The last song, "The Long Dream" is another instrumental which sounds like it came directly from Rick Wright's Broken China, only with a Gilmour style guitar. The heavily layered synthesizers and keyboards are prominent and lush. I contacted Tony Red about the absence of lyrics. He informed me of the hard financial decisions that bands in their early years must make. The CD was not produced and is not distributed by any major label or record company. Being self produced, the decision not to include lyrics on the CD was a hard one but one that had to be made with the bands limited financial resources. He did say that the lyrics were posted on the bands web site and linked to the song titles. So I gladly copied the lyrics for my personal benefit, and I post them here for our members.
Prolog - (Instrumental)
Brain Rape
What do you see
What do you hear
We can tell you what you need to know
And what you need to fear
We are digging out your feelings
That was hidden long ago
With a shattered mind and open heart
Is there something we should know
Is it something we can share
How can you know
How can you tell
We can suck out your emotions
For a fat fee and a spell
Are you playing out your life
On other peoples dreams
When the here and now is over
Can you tell me what it means
Is it something we can share
Is it something we should know
Can you tell me what you see
Is it something we should fear.
Can you tell me what you see
Is it something we should know
Can you tell me what it means
Is it something we can share
Is it something we should fear
The Circle
Torn between the right and wrong in everything we see
Finding we were not as strong as we made out to be
All the joy and all the pain we put out in our lives
Making friends and enemies, and cheating on our wives
And we go on
Torn between the right and wrong decisions you have made
Examining you conscience and the path that you have laid
All the good and all the bad we gather on the way
Comes creeping up behind you in the circle we all play
And we go on
Returns one day to take another look
To find your hidden secrets, won't let you off the hook
All the good and all the bad we gather on the way
Comes creeping up behind you in the circle we all play
Will all the cynics please leave the room as we face up to the truth
Holding on to dreams we had, embedded in our youth
But there is so much more to be done as we reach out for the sun.
And we go on
And we go on.
If I Had Power - (Instrumental)
Waiting For Inspiration
I'm waiting for inspiration
To carry on the fight
For love and hate and jealousy, to put the world to right
To tell you of my feelings
To bore you with my fears
And what I have believed in all these years
I'm still waiting for inspiration
But nothing is coming through
Staring at the ceiling, and all I see is you
So I'll wait until tomorrow
And make myself a deal
In my own little piece of heaven - It'll be a steal.
Scanning For Life
We received your message long ago
And realized we are not alone
An alien existence needing friends
Using our technology, we built a new machine
To carry us to where there is no end
What did you ever think of us, while hiding in the wind
Waiting for the day we will achieve
You left behind an ocean
Of things we could not see
The time has come, we are ready to believe
Racing to your rescue
With images of peace
As we follow the signal to your lands
With the hopes and dreams of every life
That walk upon our earth
To find the truth of God, and all his plans
Reaching a distant Galaxy
To find a fading star,
Majestic and celestial in it's flow
Your cities lay in ruin
And buried in the sand
A race that died a thousand years ago.
Hope
Is there hope, is there trust
Is there something here I cannot see
Is there faith, enough for all
Where is the love you had for me
When you look at the years you have wasted
And only bad feeling remain
You push and pull to find your own ground
While finding somebody to blame
Is it time, to let go
We have grown apart, gone different ways
Does your smile still open doors
With your soft warm voice and jagged claws
When you're on the wrong side of a bad deal
Pushing too hard to let them know how you feel
Nothing gets through, doesn't make any sense-at all
Home Again
Home again, I listen to your words
Making sense of every cutting line
Open up your heart to truth
And pour yourself upon the world
Searching for the dark side of the moon.
Home again, I feel your soothing touch
Deep beneath the pain of steel guitar
Playing with emotions
While fighting for control
Images of madness behind the wall.
Take me home again, I still listen to your words
This crazy world is becoming very clear
When I'm feeling down and out
You fill me with your life
Home again, wishing you were here.

The Long Dream - (Instrumental)
These original Floydian style tunes are a Godsend to those of us enduring so many years of Floydian famine. The songs are great, the sound is great and the lyrics are great. And the special effects and female vocals add greatly to the Floydian style of this album. Although in many ways the sound and feel of the music is similar to that of Pink Floyd, Think Floyd does have their own individual and creative style and sound. And it sounds great. They deserve to be commended. It's like 'a new machine'!
Over-all, this album is quite excellent. For Floydian fanatics Think Floyd "Hope" is definitely an album you will want. If you are even a casual listener to Pink Floyd and like the Floyd sound and style, and you're tired of waiting for 4 tired old men to get off their duffs and produce something new, this album is a must have.
Note: - A year after I wrote this review, I have come to regard the Think Floyd HOPE CD much more favorably to say the least.
