The musicianship here really is top draw and this band of white boys could easily have backed James Brown and gotten away with it. 'Rawville' is essentially an album of gritty, organic funk numbers. A throwback to the days of 'Funky Drummer', the album has even been produced to sound 'retro' and on that score everything works fine together. The big problem with the album though is a distinct lack of variety. Sure, there are a few vocal tracks and Ohmega Watts even pops up to rap on a couple of sides but the emphasis pretty much all the way is on the funk.
Two or three 'butt shifters' like 'Happy', 'The Witch' and 'Pussy Footin' on an album might be o.k. but when even the vocal tracks are 'gut wrenching soul shakers and movers' it all gets a bit samey. 'Bring It Home' features an Aretha 'Respect' like performance from Alice Russell and 'My Baby's Cheating (I Sure Got The Feeling') featuring Fallon Williams sounds exactly what you would imagine the same song would sound like if sung by a man. Both songs even start in a very similar fashion for goodness sake! Not only does this do nothing to change the focus of the album it also makes the album sound more like a cliche of what has gone before than a tribute.
In fact, only in the very middle of the album with 'I Don't Wanna Stop' and 'Head In The Clouds' do we get a slight change of direction and ironically both tracks end up sounding a little like The Brand New Heavies - they themselves a retro revivalist funk group.
So then, if you want 'the funk and nothing but the funk' you may well love this album but for those looking for something with more light and shade 'Rawville' is an album to listen to in small doses only. – Antony May ~ Amazon.co.uk.
