The Who - Tommy Live With Special Guests (2006) REPOST

Making this rock classic available for the first time as a single-disc, stand-alone DVD, Rhino is proud to present The Who’s, Tommy Live With Special Guests. This live rendition of The Who’s full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy was performed live in 1989 at The Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, with special guests Elton John, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Winwood.
This is a great rendition of Tommy. It's not how The Who used to do it, get Live at Leeds or the Isle of Wight for that, it's not the movie, it's a new Who setting out on their new path. Remember this was done in 1989, Simon Townsend, a keyboard player, and drummer have been added to the core line up, for the Tommy tour they added horns, a percussionist, and backing chorus. Then there's the special guests who, in Roger's words, 'nick all the good songs'. The Who never did Cousin Kevin in the old days, Billy Idol is great, Pete always wanted Steve Winwood as The Hawker, he does fine, Phil Collins must have had a court order to stay off the drums but does a great Uncle Ernie, John Entwistle sang Fiddle About before the movie. Patti LaBelle is a good Acid Queen but I'm a bit partial to Pete's quiet almost creepy rendition, which you get with the three disk set. Nothing to say about Elton John doing Pinball Wizard, it's just nothing without Roger swinging his mic, but on the three disk set you get The Who version as it should be. ~Amazon
