Dowland: Farewell, Unkind - Songs & dances – The Boston Camerata, Joel Cohen
    EAC | FLAC IMG+CUE+LOG | Complete HQ Scans | 1CD | 321 MB
    Classical: Renaissance | Erato 0630-12704-2 | 1996 (rec. 1995)

A comic Dowland? After so many interpretations that explore the solitary, melancholic aspect of the great Elizabethan lutenist, this one effectively changes the décor. After introspection, the theater, after the intimacy of the dialogue between solo voice and lute, the bright colors of an "early" musical comedy. The concept is quite simple, and indeed one can ask why noone has thought of it before: thanks to the mixture of sources, this recital takes on an extraordinary dynamism. The program is conceived like a guided tour to an Elizabethan palace: the Queen's chambers, songs of awakening, declarations of love, tears, farewells. Surprisingly, the recital begins with a psalm….the soloists are treated as actors…we appreciate the articulation of Karen Clark on track 8, as well as Anne Azéma's spontaneity, reaching towards nonchalance in Go Crystal Tears, or flirting with irony in Lasso vita mia. The two female voices are models of complicity and elegance. Another lovely surprise: the period pronunciation is brought off quite naturally. Finally, the dances have a sort of bohemian character that is delightful, far from the metaphysical depths into which some people have wanted to place them. As Joel Cohen reminds us, Dowland decried the court and its futile pastimes because he failed in his attempt to be appreciated by them…. This voyage through the looking-glass of courtly theatre, dreamed-about and perhaps inaccessible, beautifully illuminates the other face of his genius.
