As persistency goes, one must give credit where it is due to the Vitamin imprint. Their rigorous schedule of releases assures the public that there will be, at bare minimum, one to two releases per month paying homage to a current pop icon or legendary rock figure. With this installment, the label looks to honor one of grunge's most revered albums, if not the most revered album of the era: Nirvana's Nevermind. Stripped of the brutal percussion work, the squelching fierce attack of Kurt Cobain's guitar mastery and his trademark screams, the quartet find and emphasize layer after layer within the simplicity of Cobain's melodies and song arrangements. While some songs don't transfer over well in the process, others work quite nicely. While most people can easily dismiss this as a novelty (and to a degree, it is), there are interesting aspects to this album that the die-hard Nirvana fan will find intriguing and enjoyable

Never mind that Nevermind changed the sound of mainstream rock. Never mind that Nevermind's sound became the industry standard for alternative rock. Never mind that Nirvana grabbed us by the balls and made us listen to the sound of our own hearts.

Like a thief in the night, Nevermind came in the back door and cleaned out everything before it. It successfully erased (except in the most ironic sense) a whole genre of music - hair metal - while providing a way for people to rock without embarrassing themselves. Much harder than any mainstream rock of 1991, the unbridled power of Nevermind is as catchy as The Beatles and as heavy as Black Sabbath. A brilliant anti-pop pop album, and a great modern punk record.

Few albums have occupied the cultural consciousness like Nevermind. And though this landmark album is hard to hear with fresh ears, The String Quartet Tribute to Nirvana's Nevermind gives you the opportunity. Spring is definitely here again on this latest release from Vitamin Records. We have lovingly distilled Cobain's songs down to their purest essence. Intricate melodies accentuate unusual chord progressions, while the dynamic arrangements performed on violin and cello translate grunge into classical punk. Exhilarating and haunting, it takes you back while taking you forward. Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours.
