A desperately under rated band which has had many line-ups, all of them led by the brilliant Dave Cousins - guitarist and vocalist. The Strawbs sound is immediately identifiable and includes elements of rock, folk, and classical influences. First and foremost they are brilliant musicians, and this DVD showcases some of their best tracks.
Visually this DVD is a little 'of its time' and lacks the slick production values of contemporary music footage, but the sound is excellent and it is a real treat to hear 'The Hangman and the Papist' in a stirring live performance - although the absence of Rick Wakeman (who plays on the original recording on the 'From The Witchwood' album) means that the keyboard introduction is a bit of a let down. Cousins was clearly in fine vocal form for this concert and his tribute to one-time band member Sandy Denny (later of Fotheringay and Fairport Convention)- 'Ringing Down The Years' - is given a particularly moving performance. Also spectacular is 'The River/Down By The Sea' - a haunting, almost grunge but very evocative song.
For those with no DVD footage in their collection I would recommend the 'Complete Strawbs At Chiswick House' DVD first as it includes performances by several different line-ups and offers more songs from different periods in the band's history (all performed in an anniversary concert celebrating 35 years of the band)…By M.
