A strange, lo-fi item. The first three gigs performed by the band captured on handheld. Sound was via a single, stereo condenser. Funnily enough, it struck a chord with many fans as it certainly places you in the middle of the crowd. Bruce can't bring himself to watch it. 'We were shit' he recalls.
Collectors note - The first edition has black 'on-cd' labels. The re-press is clearly marked on the case and features a different, colour on-cd print. All individually numbered. We've lost count how many we pressed, but it was definitely less than 400.

Как ни странно, это пришлось в кайф многим нашим фанатам, - запись словно переносит вас в самую середину зрительской толпы. А вот Брюс до сих пор не может заставить себя всё это пересмотреть. "Мы были полным говном" - вспоминает он.
Вниманию коллекционеров: первопресс сделан в чёрном цвете. Второй пресс чётко обозначен на коробке, а диски имеют цветные лейблы. Каждый диск имеет индивидуальный номер. Мы сбились со счёта, сколько всего наштамповано дисков, но общее их число определённо меньше 400.

This here DVD, Live 2003, released by Pineapple Thief themselves, is not an official release by any means whatsoever. Recorded by friends of the band, with the audio being recorded by a single microphone hung above the stages where the songs were recorded, it is obvious that this release was not professionally done. The back of the case, and the Pineapple Thief website tout that this DVD is “for anyone that wants to share with the band the beginnings of Pineapple Thief.” It also warns that the “camera work may induce motion sickness”, and that the sound mix is “fair at best.”

In stating all of this, I think that Bruce was rather harsh on himself and the band, because the camera work is not all that bad, and the sound mix is actually a lot better than a lot of the professionally recorded DVDs coming out in recent times. At times, the camera placement can be bad, but only for the song Vapour Trails is the camera too far back consistently throughout the song. While watching, though, I did not find the need to run to the bathroom and puke because of the camera work.

The set list itself is varied between the “middle” albums of the bands career, 137 and Variations On A Dream. Although it contains slightly more material from the latter, the flow of the songs is almost seamless, besides the fact that they were taken from the three first gigs of the bands career and put together onto this DVD. To rid the DVD of any choppiness between songs, each of them fade out, and a white screen fades in with the song name on the white screen. Not bothersome at all, and a good way to split up the songs.

As for the bonus studio tracks, I am not sure which album they are B-sides from, but they are included on the audio CD portion of the DVD, which is the show itself, and the bonus tracks. They are not live, but none the less, they are very good. My favorite is probably Bliss, a song fueled by electronics. A nice little bonus feature, I had not heard the songs until I bought the DVD, and as usual, I am not disappointed at all.

Pineapple Thief biography:

The guitarist of VULGAR UNICORN starts his solo career with this band, which is inspired as much by PORCUPINE TREE as by his old group. PINEAPPLE THIEF has a mix of prog with some space rock. Balance, beauty, and modernity are all to be found in the plush sounds of PINEAPPLE THIEF … great melodies, songs and plenty of atmospheres. This band will appeal to fans of RADIOHEAD, but other occasional influences show through that are less obvious but apparent (PINK FLOYD, U2, OZRICS and KING CRIMSON).

With their second release, PINEAPPLE THIEF (PTh for short) have reached a state of grace with their frenzy guitar drawings and acoustic sets, using Mellotron to the better effect without ever sounding retro. Indeed, and more than with the two previous albums from PINEAPPLE THIEF, "Variations on a Dream" is brimming over with its creator's talent and is impressive with its incredible commercial potential. Thus, PTh has elaborated a "double layer album", in which the prog fan will enjoy the fine-tuned production and the arrangements, while the pop rock lovers will be delighted with accessible and addictive songs. This is the type of CD that one plays over again as soon as it ends. A little miracle of balance, and a place in my Top 5 for 2003.

The Pineapple Thief — британская прогрессив-рок группа, образованная в Сомерсете в 1999 году.

В 1999 году Брюс Сурд (англ. Bruce Soord), ранее игравший в составе Vulgar Unicorn, решил организовать сольный проект для продвижения своей музыки. Дебютный альбом «Abducting the Unicorn», выпущенный в том же году британским лейблом «Cyclops», привлек к себе внимание публики, у The Pineapple Thief появляется небольшая, но преданная группа поклонников. Поддержка фанатов и одобрительная реакция критиков воодушевили Брюса продолжить работу над новым альбомом «137». В это время к его проекту начинают проявлять интерес крупные звукозаписывающие компании, что вызвало задержку записи нового материала. Как бы то ни было, третий альбом «Variations on a Dream», вышедший в 2003 году, стал известен за пределами Британии и сделал The Pineapple Thief одним из самых успешных на своем лейбле.

Весной 2002 года Брюс начинает собирать команду для выступлений на концертах. В группу были приглашены бас-гитарист Джон Сайкс(англ. Jon Sykes), игравший вместе с Брюсом в университетской рок группе, гитарист Уейн Хиггинс(англ. Wayne Higgins), клавишник Мэтт О’Лири(англ. Matt O'Leary), а также барабанщик (англ. Keith Harrison). В 2004 году они записали альбом «10 Stories Down». Однако такой состав оказался недолговечным, по разным причинам группу покидают О’Лири в 2005 году и Хиггинс в марте 2008 году. Новым клавишником стал Стив Китч((англ. Steve Kitch)), в дальнейшем в составе группы так и осталось четыре участника.

Альбомы «Little Man» 2006 года и «What We Have Sown» 2007 года стали последними записанными на «Cyclops Records», в дальнейшем группа перешла на лейбл Kscope, являющийся подразделением Snapper Music. В работе над альбомом принял участие легендарный дизайнер Сторм Торгерсон, оформивший большинство альбомов Pink Floyd (в том числе Dark Side Of The Moon), а также известный по работе с Muse, Led Zeppelin, Dream Theater и др. В музыкальном плане альбом стал более экспериментальным, он выдержан в духе современного нео-прогрессива под значительным влиянием электронной музыки с несколько утяжеленным звучанием(«Nothing At Best», «So We Row»).

В 2010 группа выступила на ряде европейских концертов и представлений и отправилась в двухнедельный тур по Континентальной Европе.
