The viol consort was introduced to England in the early sixteenth century and was mainstay of domestic music until the middle of the seventeenth century. After the Restoration of Charles II to the throne in 1660, things rapidly changed with the rise in popularity of the violin amongst court musical lfe and amateurs. Composers soon ceased to contribute to the viol consort repertory, with some of Purcell's contemporaries such as Roger North regretting the change. North acknowledged that the violin was 'very excellent in it's kind', but thought that the 'noble Base Viol' embodied all its 'sublimitys'. As North recognised, the viol was not entirely supplanted by the violin in the Restoration period. The bass viol remained in use as a continuo instrument in chamber music until the early eighteenth century, and the instrument acquired a new repertory of solos, duet and trios with continuo. This recording is a survey of this little-known but rewarding repertory.

Peter Holman, director of The Parley of Instruments, has become the foremost master of the miscellany through his long-running series, The English Orpheus. No one can doubt that a tremendous amount of research and experience goes into each recording, and ‘The Noble Bass Viol’ is no exception. The music, rarities for one to three bass viols (usually accompanied), has been taken from often unique manuscript sources in Oxbridge libraries (the Bodleian and the Fitzwilliam) as well as now obscure printed collections from the late seventeenth to the early eighteenth centuries, with intriguing titles such as The Delightful Companion (1686) and A Musicall Entertainment for a Chamber (c1724).

Much of the music on this CD was composed by foreign-born musicians for British consumption: Purcell, Hely and Gorton give way to Italians (Draghi, Conti, Corelli and Bocchi), a German (Handel) and a Moravian (Finger), reflecting the cosmopolitan mix – or at least almost, as no French music by Sainte-Colombe le fils (preserved in Durham) appears here – of musicians, particularly in London and Dublin. The familiar Dioclesian Chaconne, arranged by Francis Withy for three viols, immediately puts the listener at ease and ready to sample the tuneful Draghi ground, which depends more on changing ornamentation than fancy bowing, and the drama of the Bocchi sonata. The cache of Finger – for one, two and three bass viols and accompaniment – provides glimpses of the composer as virtuoso (trained by Biber, who incidentally played the viol as well as the violin) and emigre whose Pastorale incorporates several of his native Czech carols. The transcriptions of Corelli and Handel return the listener to more familiar territory.

The performances are faithful and give off a not inappropriate aura of private rather than public music-making. The principal violist – and I imagine the instigator of this recording – is Mark Caudle, a long-serving, founding member of The Parley; Susanna Pell and Susanne Heinrich (both newer to the group) take the second and third (continuo) parts. The tone of the viols, never large or deeply resonant on its own, is enhanced by the accompaniment of theorbo or archlute and chamber organ. A recording of this repertory played by another group might give an altogether different, perhaps more seductive impression, but the odds are that no one but Peter Holman would have quite the imagination and scholarship to assemble the programme.'
