This new album from The Orlando Consort charts the radical development of music between the late thirteenth and mid fifteenth centuries—the transition from what is at essence embellished chant to the extraordinary mathematical intricacies of experimental polyphony.
Setting aside my objection to the ‘Northern Star’ reference—there was ground-breaking polyphony of superlative quality being composed at this time further north in the British Isles—this CD is a useful look at the roots of English polyphony. It throws a new spotlight on some unfamiliar and mainly anonymous English music from the period immediately prior to the Old Hall Manuscript, although the notes are vexingly vague about the sources of this earliest repertoire.
I have often had reservations about the sound the Orlando Consort produces, and here too particularly with the earliest repertoire there is an annoying degree of vibrato in the inner voices, while the music seems to be divided between ‘sweet’ music, which receives gentle performances, and ‘lively’ music, which is given altogether rougher treatment. There are entire pieces here where the blend is never truly established, and I find it hard to tolerate this, let alone begin to enjoy it. Having said that, there is a general clarity of articulation and a pleasing parity of balance in more animated sections. With the slightly later repertoire from Old Hall onwards, the situation is generally happier, and the expected music of Power and Dunstaple is complemented with less familiar repertoire by Byttering, Gervays, Damett and Alanus. This is an informative survey of the roots of English polyphony, but to judge it at the highest level, I do have reservations about some of the performances. I know that the Orlando Consort has a dedicated and enthusiastic following, and their fans will not hesitate to invest in this CD, and a fair proportion of the works here are simply not available elsewhere.Review by D. England's Orlando Consort has amassed a strong following and has evolved into one of the most popular groups exploring the early music vocal repertory. Their fans will likely be delighted to find them stretching back to the rarely recorded early English medieval era with this release, and even general listeners will welcome the music recorded here, in roughly chronological order (and be impressed that this vocal group can bring even very obscure music to the top of the classical charts). The program covers, as promised, the rise of English polyphony in the generations preceding the Old Hall Manuscript, with its music by Leonel Power and John Dunstable, immensely influential not only in England, but on the Continent, with its use of the third as a consonance and its inclination to set mass movements in unified groups. Much of the music is murkily attributed or anonymous, and it's fascinating to hear the use of the third evolve. There are motets with multiple texts (included); sample the ambitious Sub Arturo plebs. The second half of the program is a little survey of the earliest days of the Mass setting as it is known today. The Orlando Consort sings this music one to a part, an unattested practice that gives it an oddly madrigalian quality. But their precise harmonies will satisfy their fans, and they have done a great service by releasing this largely unrecorded music.Review by James Manheim, Allmusic.com
