1960 - 1961 - The Beatles - Quarrymen VBR~224

This is the second of two releases that surfaced on CD as a series 'The Complete Beatles' and captures some of the transistion period from The Quarrymen through to The Beatles.
Material includes some longer home taped improvised instrumentals that are quite listenable however in reality more of a historical collectors item than one for your mp3 player.
The studio material is very good quality and marks another milestone on the road to The Beatles.
Credit and respect should be given to Tony Sheridan who was also clearly part of this era of the bands development, it remains ironic that Polydor Records viewed him as the talent and artist to go with and tended to 'bury' members of The Beatles involvement.

recorded 4 November 1965
mixed and acetate cut 30 November 1965

BONUS:
02 - 12-Bar Original (takes 1, 2 and rehearsal)
complete stereo raw session tape (not an acetate)
Although the rehearsal is at the end of the tape, it was recorded BEFORE take 1. The rehearsal was recorded over by takes 1 and 2.
This copy is an edit of tracks taken from "Turn Me On Dead Man" (for takes 1 & 2) and "Arrive Without Aging" (for the rehearsal - speed corrected and re-eq'd)
Personally, I believe that the mixes heard on "Turn Me On Dead Man" and "Arive Without Aging" are two different mixes.

This track seems to have a very narrow stereo spread.

Ain't She Sweet

01 - Ain't She Sweet (mono acetate)
recorded 24 June 1961at Studio Rahlstedt, Hamburg
10" MGM/Verve acetate

This acetate probably dates from early 1964 when the Tony Sheridan recordings began being licensed in the U.S.
This song was, of course, the first commercially released recordings of The Beatles as a single unit.
Because this, originally, was recorded on only a two-track tape, this mix is similar, and probably identical, to the standard released mono mix.
I haven't personally done a close examination of this recording. This copy is taken from "Acetates Collection"

Bad To Me One And One Is Two

01 - Bad To Me

Recorded around May 1963 at some unknown location. The recording is probably sourced from a Dick James acetate once owned by Brian Epstein then owned by Alistair Taylor (Brian's assistant). Taylor auctioned the acetate at Sotheby's on 22 December 1981. According to John Winn (in Way Beyond Compare), it "was probably recorded for copyright purposes, and not to demonstrate the song to Billy" (see his book for his reasoning).
The copy featured here is taken from Not For Sale. Unlike the copy heard on Acetates, this copy has the beginning and end intact. Also, meticulous effort has been taken to remove the surface noise produced by the NFS disc without the use of noise reduction. This restores the actual sound of the acetate.

02 - One And One Is Two

This is sourced from a Dick James acetate recorded at the Hotel George V, Paris sometime between 18 January - 4 February 1964 as a demo for Billy J. Kramer who rejected the song. Ultimately, the song was recorded by The Fourmost.

Download 1 is taken from Acetates with a second or so of surface and ambient noise off the acetate,
taken from Ultra Rare Trax 3 edited to the beginning and end. This track has not been subject to the same
cleaning-up process as "Bad To Me.

Download 2 is sourced from Warts 'n' All (Martha Records). It appears to not have the noise

HELP!

15 February 1965
01 - Ticket To Ride (take 2 RM?)

16 February 1965
02 - Another Girl (take 1 RM?)

03 - I Need You (take 5 RM?)

04 - Yes It Is (take 14 RM?)

05 - HELP!
78 rpm film production acetates 17 February 1965
06 - The Night Before (take 2 RM?)

07 - You Like Me Too Much (take 8 RM?)

18 February 1965
08 - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (take 9 RM?)

19 February 1965
09 - You're Going Lose That Girl (take 3 RM?)

According to the liner notes from "Help! Original Mix", these are Twickenham 78 rpm discs (I would assume single-sided).
Neither Doug Sulpy nor John Winn reference that designation. Indeed, these discs are a bit of a mystery. With the exception of "Help!",
the official recording dates for all these songs were
15 - 19 February 1965 and mixed 20 - 23 Febuary 1965. The official mono mixes are all RM1s but the mixes featured here are each different to some degree.
In addition, these mixes feature title announcements and count-ins. So where do these mixes originate? Lewisohn mentions, on 22 February 1965,
The Beatles took "a copy tape of all 11 remixes" with them to the Bahamas for Walter Shenson and Dick Lester.
However, it seems unlikely to be the source for these recordings. John Barrett's notes (seen - here) offer no real evidence.

Magical Mystery Tour

29 September 1967
01 - Magical Mystery Tour (take 9 RM4)

This acetate is VERY scratchy. The available recording,
taken from "Another Tracks Of Magical Myatery Tour",
has the surface noise in stereo. The copy featured here is
folded to mono. This reduces (but doesn't eliminate) the
surface noise without the use of noise reduction.

02 - Magical Mystery Tour (take 9 RM7)

03 - Your Mother Should Know (take 8 RM?)

04 - I Am The Walrus (take 17 RM?)

taken and re-eq'd from "Hodge Podge Vol. 1".
no one documents this mix but, it IS different.

05 - I Am The Walrus (take 17 RM4)

06 - Fool On The Hill (take 1 RM1)

07 - Blue Jay Way (take 3 RM1)

08 - Blue Jay Way (take 3 RS?)
see notes about this track - here

09 - Flying (RM4)
taken from "Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 3"

10 - King Lear (excerpt)
source unknown (not an acetate)

all tracks are taken from "Acetates" unless noted.

She's A Woman

01 - She's A Woman-Take 5 RM?
recorded 8 October 1964
Because of George Martin's remark, "take 5, is it? take7", heard on the raw tape, this performance is typically identified as take 7. However, I concur with John Winn that Mr. Martin was correct the first time. The source of this recording is a 7" Emidisc and this copy is taken from "Acetates Collection".

02 - She's A Woman- Take 6 RM?
recorded 8 October 1964
This is an absolute dry mix of the released performance. The source of this recording is a
7" Emidisc and this copy is taken from
"Acetates Collection".

The documented mix dates for the mono mixes of this song are 12 October 1964 (RM1 for the UK) and 21 October 1964 (RM2 for the US).
Since this take 6 mix does not match either RM1 or RM2, it is my assumption that these are rough mixes probably done the night of the session
or perhaps the next day. The likely scenerio is that these were the best performances and reference acetates were cut to determine which one to use.
They chose take 6 for further overdubs and mixing. NOTE: Lewisohn states that take 7 was recorded but, perhaps, he too was mislead by George Martin's remark.

Paperback Writer

01 - Paperback Writer (take 2 RM1?)
recorded 13 - 14 April 1966
mixed 14 April 1966
Emidisc?
no one seems to document this mix but it IS different
taken from "Hodge Podge Vol. 1"

02 - Paperback Writer (take 2 RS3)
recorded 13 - 14 April 1966
mixed 31 October 1966
8" Capitol acetate
this is the standard stereo mix
taken from "Acetates Collection"

BONUS:

03 - Paperback Writer (takes 1-2)
raw session tape (not an acetate)
recorded 13 - 14 April 1966
taken from "Ultimate Collection Vol. 3"

Quarrymen (1958)

01 - In Spite Of All the Danger (3:25 edit) DOWNLOAD
Recorded in the summer of 1958, this disc, a 10" 78 rpm Phillips Sound Studio shellac is, of course, THE acetate!
I mean, it really has everythimg on it's side - the only one in existence, the earliest recordings of The Beatles as a unit,
the only composition ever credited to McCartney-Harrison and all in reasonable quality. For a full description and illustrations, see - here

NOTE: "In Spite Of All The Danger" has been edited to represent it's actual length. It is NOT taken from one of the replicas of this disc which allegedly contain the full version.
The full version is otherwise unavailable. This edit was determined based on information presented in John Winn's book
"Way Beyond Compare" and discussion on Yahoo's Beatleg Group. "That'll Be The Day" is NOT featured here because it is readily available on
"Anthology 1" (buy the album) but it should, certainly, be included in any comprehensive Beatles acetate collection.

Some Other Guy Kansas City - Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey (excerpt)

01 - Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey

02 - Some Other Guy
On 22 August 1962, Granada TV filmed The Beatles performing this song at The Cavern. Due to the poor audio quality on the film, a second audio-only recording was made 5 September with the intent to dub it over the film. The overdub was never done and the acetates described below are the only remaining artifacts of the September recording.

At the end of the recording, John is heard saying "We'll probably have to do it again". Could this mean that a third performance was recorded?

The copy featured here is taken from "Live In The United Kingdom 1962-1965" where it is the most complete. It is also found on "Ultimate Collection Vol 1" but the outro is cut and noise reduction is used. It's also on "Puttin' On the Style" where the intro is cut. The quality is the same on all releases.

NOTE: the recording heard on "Puttin' On the Style" features a glitch sound at the beginning of the recording. Does this indicate a different acetate source or is it just someone's poor tape copy?

Kansas City / Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey (excerpt) - DOWNLOAD
Apparently, this song was performed at the 22 August filming. However, that recording has only survived as silent footage which has been excerpted in a variety of documentaries.
It's likely that the song was performed at the second taping for reasons similar to "Some Other Guy".

The recording featured here is only the excerpt as presented in "Anthology". However, the recording has been "oopsed" along with a bit of further digital trickery.
This process has removed nearly all of the voice-over heard in "Anthology".

The Acetates
According to John Winn (in "Way Beyond Compare"),
"… a 12" reference acetate and five 7" two-sided acetates [were]
pressed" and Brian Epstein had a "batch of discs manufactured"
for promotion and sale. He goes on to mention, "… a good quality acetate [of "Some Other Guy" was] auctioned by Sotheby's in
September 1983" and it was originally featured in the radio special "SPLHCB". Further, referencing the portion of "Kansas City" that is circulating,
he states, "…[it] is a copy of the acetate auctioned at Christie's in 1993 and purchased by Apple". He further related to me
that he believed all available recordings of "Some Other Guy" are sourced from the same acetate So…while two-sided acetates of these titles seem to exist,
apparently the available recordings are sourced
from two different acetates.
