Teitur - Albums Collection 2003-2013 (7CD)

Evoking images of sensitive '70s MOR, the pensive male singer/songwriter came into vogue as the millennium turned. Teitur (full name Teitur Lassen) came to prominence on the heels of this movement. Though he is often compared to John Mayer, Poetry & Aeroplanes is more otherworldly than most Mayer fare, possibly as a result of Teitur's cosmopolitan background (he left the Faroe Islands as a teenager and proceeded to spend little time on any one continent). Dramatic orchestrations fill out most of the material, leaving the few ballads that are relegated to guitar-and-vocals sophistry to seem overly simplistic, like Dave Matthews without the hippie inclinations. As is often the case with artists such as Teitur, the music is relatively insignificant, and that is where the debut falters most glaringly. When left to rest on lyrical laurels exclusively, Teitur's wistful tales come off as trite and ridden with clichés. He aspires to become James Taylor, but he lacks Taylor's ability to connect with the material, and consequently fails to connect with listeners as well.

Teitur (last name not used: Lassen) is a singer/songwriter who, early in his life, left the northern European Faroe Islands and now spends most of his time in Denmark, which largely owns the (mostly) independent Faroes. Teitur is largely independent himself, particularly since leaving the confines of the major Universal label for the Arlo and Betty label he shares with his manager (the album is licensed to Equator Music in the U.S.). Singing in English, he released his debut, Poetry & Aeroplanes, in 2003 to mostly thumbs-up reviews, and one track, "One and Only," founds its way into a couple of film soundtracks, notably the slight comedy My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Slight is also an apt description of Stay Under the Stars, but it's not necessarily a derogatory one. Teitur's songs have a breezy wispiness underneath their melancholy chord changes – think a happier Nick Drake or a modern-day Al Stewart – and his sparing use of orchestration and fanciful keyboard colorations make the songs seem lighter on the surface than they actually are. Sometimes Teitur likes to play his words against his sounds: On "I Run the Carousel" he begins, accompanied by glockenspiel and other mixed keys, by stating flatly that he does indeed operate said carnival ride, "with horses and Tinkerbell late night by the canal." It's only when he confesses that "Sometimes it tortures me, the envy and the jealousy, but I never panic," that it's clear we're not in Jonathan Richman country here. On occasion, Teitur does turn up the volume, but never too much, and when you expect it the most, as on his cover of the Jerry Lee Lewis oldie "Great Balls of Fire," he turns that expectation on its head by going practically baroque with it.

A Faroe Islander whose distinctive, idiosyncratic tone compares to fellow "Northern Lights" artists such as Stina Nordenstam, Bjork and Sigur Ros.

Teitur Lassen is an intriguing writer and a moving singer whose performances on The Singer wreak a kind of understated but devastating passion comparable to Anthony & The Johnsons. Despite having recorded several albums since 2003 – he spent a few frustratingly unappreciated years with Universal before opting for a more self-determined route – The Singer is, to my knowledge, his first UK release, albeit a year later than most other territories.

Teitur manages the remarkable feat of taking episodes from his own life and dramatising them in songs which manage to reflect the ambivalence, unexpectedness and sometimes downright contradictory nature of reality, in a mischievous character whose black humour can cause the laugh to choke in one's throat, or transform tears of sadness to tears of joy, mid-song. The cheeky self-aggrandisement of the title-track, for instance, disguises a tribute to the way that singing can be simultaneously both individual expression and act of communion between performer and audience; and in "We Still Drink The Same Water", his musings about a reclusive former girlfriend reveal himself as the real estranged victim of the failed relationship.

Perhaps pointedly, that song follows two others dealing with fantasy relationships. Set to a Calexico-esque faux-Western arrangement of horns, guitar, drums and prepared piano, "The Girl I Don't Know" finds Teitur, in a lovely image, "walk[ing] these streets with her name in my shadow", while his fond fantasies of dating "Catherine The Waitress", set to Steve Reich-like marimba and throbbing reeds, are suddenly disturbed, halfway through, by a disconcerting reference to a nasty accident.

Death stalks several of these songs, from the funeral tableau "You Should Have Seen Us" and the accidental manslaughter in "Guilt By Association", to the moving account of a "Legendary Afterparty" spent in a cheap motel with the blues guitarist Chris Whitley, then (unbeknown to Teitur) dying of lung cancer but smoking hard nonetheless.

Rather than a pop record, The Singer is in the tradition of lieder and art-song, with the extraordinary arrangements of marimba, prepared piano, brass, reeds, percussion and mournful bowed bass devised by Lassen and his chief collaborator Tróndur Bogason cut to the bone for maximum effect it's often uncomfortable, but never uninteresting; for all its mischief and frivolity, it's devoid of emotional artifice A rare beast.

Faroe Islander Teitur Lassen's UK debut The Singer is one of this year's more arresting releases, its mischievous, emotionally revealing songs employing a thrilling mix of memorable images, inventive chamber-pop arrangements, and deceptive lyrical strategies – most notably the unreliable narrator whose observations suddenly turn in upon themselves to illuminate the singer's own situation.

Before this, however, Teitur had already earned a measure of homegrown Danish success with his earlier albums Poetry & Aeroplanes and Stay Under The Stars. It's from these that the bulk of the songs on the catch-up compilation All My Mistakes are derived. Their arrangements are nowhere near as sophisticated as those devised for The Singer – most involving only acoustic guitar and strings in a manner that casts the singer as a sort of Danish David Gray – while the more straightforward love songs such as "One & Only", "Don't Want You To Wake Up" and "Sleeping With The Lights On" exposes his vulnerability in a way that he would later skilfully evade. But he's still capable of succinct insights, such as when discussing romantic opposites in "You're The Ocean" – "Love is somewhere in between/What you believe and what you dream".

But the candid nature of these songs means that just when you're settled emotionally, a lyrical thorn will prickle. On the surface, "I Was Just Thinking" is a heartwarming statement of devotion, until the singer's frustration at being separated from his lover turns corrosive: "I'm tired of calling you once a week, and thinking of long-distance rates instead of kissing you." Likewise, the cosy guitar arpeggios of "I Run The Carousel" are ruptured by darker piano chords as the carney's envy of his happy customers breaks through his veneer of disinterest. Elsewhere, "Josephine" contains the kind of childhood reminiscence that can't be found in Mika's dress-up box, while "Louis Louis" laments the decline of articulate songcraft due to insipid dance music – something Teitur's own existence would seem to disprove.

The best arrangements, and the quirkiest songs, are those representing the Singer, the fantasy love-object of "The Girl I Don't Know", who is glimpsed occasionally through a horn arrangement akin to Calexico's desert noirscapes, while the chirpy tribute to "Catherine The Waitress" rides an undercarriage of marimba and throbbing reeds akin to Steve Reich'ss "Music For 18 Musicians". But although the rest of these early pieces are less imaginatively realised, there's more than enough evidence here to bear out Teitur's assertion, in the title-track, that "all my mistakes have become masterpieces".

Though it seems, on first hearing, not to have the depth or diversity of 2009's stunning The Singer, Teitur Lassen's fifth collection of songs soon winds itself inexorably round one's heart, its emotional tendrils taking purchase like clematis scaling a garden wall.

The main difference is in the arrangements. Gone are its predecessor's more exotic excursions into minimalism and art-song, replaced by a more direct, American-style of arrangement that sometimes seems uncomfortably naked. But it's naked in the manner of Paul Simon in his less cryptic moments (such as, say, "Something So Right"). There's a simplicity and immediacy that cuts away any unnecessary poetic obfuscation in tracks like the rumination on time and change, "Waverly Place", and the paean to passivity "Fly On The Wall". "What can you be but a fly on the wall," asks Teitur, "when the world is so great, and we are so small?"

Like Simon, he has the rare gift to spark recognition with a single line, then expand the recognition into revelation. "All the things that I owned ended up owning me," observes the protagonist of "When I Had It All", going on to realise, too late, that all he really needed was his now-departed lover. In the punningly-titled "Betty Hedges" ("hedging bets", see?), his incurable procrastination is perfectly skewered with the observation, "Big questions need small answers like yes or no". As so often in Lassen's songs, romantic expectations prove unreliable. "I never rode a freight train… never got drunk in Spain," laments the wannabe-free subject of "Freight Train", while Los Angeles is painted in pastel hues of disappointment in "You Never Leave LA". Fittingly, the Seventies singer-songwriter style employed on most of the arrangements ensures that the latter has exactly the appropriate Asylum Records sound for a song which depicts Laurel Canyon filling up with broken dreams.

Only on "Stormy Weather" does the arrangement strike out for uncharted terrain, with slow, expectant piano monochords and a yawning bass growl, akin to throat-singing, eventually supplanted by stark electric guitar, glockenspiel and eerie ambient tones. But it's not as effective in conveying the song's meaning as, say, the simple organ and piano setting for the theological musings of "God, I Have So Many Things To Tell You", or the wistful strings and keyboards underscoring the apprehension of "Very Careless People". The latter is a delicately-wrought piece in which Teitur ruefully admits, "She's got a right to mess up her life – who am I to deny her, or inspire her?"

"I am in a place in my life where I need to make something that is safe, comfortable and more effortless," explains Teitur, justifying his abandonment of the complex arrangements of previous recordings, and his new-found interest in direct, classic songcraft. "I've learned that you become the music you write – and it sucks to travel around singing about funerals, death and yourself. Trust me, it does."

The plaintive pluckings of banjo and harp are blended with the wistful bathos of wind instruments on Faroe Islands enigma Teitur's latest album. The combination brings a wry tone to "Rock And Roll Band", but fails to evoke the thrill that surely leads the hapless band to pursue its ill-chosen path. The bland "Hopeful" and irritating repetitions of "If You Wait" make an underwhelming start to the album, but by the end the more textured collaging of ambient sounds and children's choir create satisfying mystery. Best of all is "It's Not Funny Anymore", an intelligent rumination on emotional uncertainty, to which Van Dyke Parks's orchestration lends appropriately thoughtful depth.
