Besides occasional appearances with Benny Goodman, pianist Teddy Wilson taught summer courses at the famous Juilliard School for music from 1946 to 1952. Despite this prestigious profession, he recorded only irregularly during these years and made most of his money as a staff pianist for WNEW. In the fall of 1952, he went on a brief tour to
Scandinavia where he was finally able to record again.
Theodore Shaw "Teddy" Wilson was born in Austin, Texas on November 24, 1912. Teddy took up the piano at an early age, and later also studied violin and several wood-winds. His first major job as a professional was with the legendary band led by drummer Speed Webb, of which unfortunately no recordings exist. (Pianists Art Tatum and Fitz Weston also worked with this orchestra at different times!) A member of the bands of Benny Carter and Willie Bryant in the early thirties, Teddy Wilson became a familiar figure among musicians. He was able to record under his own name as early as 1934, and it was his seven-year stay with Benny Goodman from 1933 to 1939 that made him a household name among jazz fans. However, his most beautiful recordings came after he had begun his collaboration with singer Billie Holiday. Wilson's excellent big band lasted only about a year, until April 1940, at which time he was forced to reduce to a sextet. After returning to the Benny Goodman band in the mid-forties, he soon after began a long association with CBS radio working either alone or with a trio for the better part of the next three decades and often rejoined the Benny Goodman outfit for concerts or tours. He was also a regular visitor to Europe, Asia and America until the news of his death reached his many fans around the world. Teddy Wilson died in New Britain, Connecticut on August 1st, 1986.
Volume 12 of the recordings of Teddy Wilson presented in chronological order opens with eight attractive trio sides made in Stockholm. Local musicians provide discreet yet very competent accompaniment. Wilson chose to play a number of fine tunes from the Great American songbook he often recorded throughout his life. No experiments – but trio jazz of the highest order. Little wonder these recordings were also issued in America not long after. On his return to America, Wilson began to record for Norman Granz who fortunately also liked this kind of rather subdued music as much as he did louder histrionics and more spectacular all star sessions. Overall the December date could well be considered the best: Buddy Rich uses his brushes in a wonderful way, revealing a lesser known facet of his playing. Few (if any) versions surpass "Dam That Dream"! In April 1953 Denzil Best replaced Buddy Rich for another outstanding series of standards. These sessions were once issued on a Clef LP entitled "The Didactic Mr. Wilson" - an apt title for music that should be studied and appreciated by anyone interested in the best of swing piano. Five months later Teddy Wilson was accompanied by yet another drummer - J.C. Heard. "Air Mail Special" shows that the leader never faltered or stumbled at a tempo most other pianists would have problems with.
