Wonderful offering from the Tears for Fears camp! Not only you get a live CD (accompanied by the same show on DVD, on this particular version) but also two unreleased studio tracks which should have been included in the Everybody Loves a Happy Ending release. Floating Down the River is a Roland Orzabal song very reminiscent of the best world music influences in the TFF back-catalogue, while What Are We Fighting For?, is resuscitated from Curt Smith's Mayfield days and shines like the diamond it is, making me even more curious to go hunt it somewhere.
The live show captures the reunited Tears for Fears, FFW some 15 years from their latest shows as a duo, live in Paris on June 18th 2005, the day I turned 31 by the way… The overall sound and feeling of the show is very good, as is the musicianship and vocal melodies of both singers. Chosen tracks include all the hits from way back, plus three songs from the latest CD. I don't know if the entire set list is included, but personally I would make a different selection, starting with the amazing title track. Call Me Mellow and Secret World are not bad songs, but also not exactly crowd pleasing material.
Upon checking the bonus DVD, one can't help having some reservations about the show itself, and why it was captured and released. Not only it appears to be part of some festival, witnessing the band in front of an audience far from their fan base, as it is played during day light proving that the band didn't exactly got that high on the bill. Also, the unsuspecting crowd, who jump for joy with the hits, couldn’t care less for the newer tracks. Still, I guess the band knows their place in the current musical scene, and take it very professionally with humorous comments and an overall laid back attitude… "Helicopter made of cheese" is not a bad try Curt, but Roland's "Zee Hurting" is unbeatable!by heldercardoso, rateyourmusic.com
