British singer-songwriter Tasmin Archer's silky voice on her debut album, Great Expectations, and hit single, "Sleeping Satellite," helped propel her toward massive media exposure in the U.K. and respectable success in the U.S. in 1993. Released in late 1992 on EMI, "Sleeping Satellite" went to number 1 both in the UK and Ireland, while sitting just outside the top 10 in Germany (number 12). Three more UK singles were released in the wake of her initial success: "In Your Care" (UK #16), "Lords of the New Church" (UK #26) and "Arienne" (UK #30). The success of those four singles pushed the album to Platinum Status in the UK. She won the Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act in 1993 and went on to release other albums.
Brit vocalist Tasmin Archer maps out some interesting terrain somewhere between Seal and Tracy Chapman on her debut Great Expectations – a layered, well-produced mix of acoustic and synthetic instrumentation overlaid with committed, soulful vocals. Lead track "Sleeping Satellite" was a hit in several parts of Europe, and it's a hypnotic, fashionably retro-psych-soul beauty. That track is backstopped by several more solid contenders, including a sombre-yet-vibrant "In Your Care," an emotionally honest "Ripped Inside," and the uncharacteristically forceful "Somebody's Daughter." While perhaps not living up to the album title, there are enough good ones (and one great one) here to make Great Expectations well worth investigating.~ Roch Parisien, All Music
