Genre: alternative rock

Zaireeka is the 1997 album by Oklahoma alternative combo The Flaming Lips. Zaireeka is a 4CD set but only has eight songs as a whole. The original process of this was you would need four CD players to play each song as they were meant to be heard. Each CD features a portion of the song from the multi-track but each track sounds different from one another. By playing them at the same time, it creates a unique sonic adventure, perhaps in surround sound. You can play all four at once or in any sequence, in any and all positions/locations. This unique project was released on 28 October, 1997.
RATING: 9.0 out of 10
I am at my friend Chris's house. It's his thirty-fourth birthday. He had called me earlier in the week. "Hey, man, I'm having some people over Friday night for my birthday. We're going to listen to Zaireeka."

Not surprising. Chris adores the Flaming Lips, and he is a sound wizard. I've used his studio before. The man can hear a computer buzzing three rooms away. I look around at the four towers of candlelit stereo equipment, pour a short glass of Maker's Mark, and sit on the sofa.

"Naw, man, sit on the floor, right here."

I crouch down, arrange myself among a pile of pillows, and take a sip of whiskey. In front of me is the main system. Is that an ADAT machine? And the receiver is set to VCR? For Zaireeka, Chris shares, he is not going to hit the play button on all four CD players at one time, like the album recommends. He has already put all four CDs on Alesis ADAT, which is hooked up to a mixing board. All the levels and EQs are in one place, so he will not have to scurry around. This is going to be good.

"Here we go," he grins at me, his fingers dashing around the buttons.

This is amazing. There must be 100 tracks here. Jet engines, acoustic guitars, ten-part harmonies all sung by Wayne Coyne in that Kermity cadence, coming at me from four directions, rising and spiraling. It's like Dark Side of the Moon, if Pink Floyd had consumed enough drugs to narcotize a small city. This music is – "What's that, Chris? They didn't what? Really? Are you kidd – " I'm sorry, um … just a sec, excuse me.

"None at all? No fucking way. Not even – no way! Chris, you lie. Nothing?"

The Flaming Lips did not take any drugs during the recording of Zaireeka. I cannot fucking believe it. The Flaming Lips did not take any drugs during the recording of Zaireeka. The Flaming Lips - Zaireeka (4CD) (1997) {Warner Bros.} **[RE-UP]**

All 4 CDs contain these 8 compositions in this order and with these song lengths
Track No. 1. Okay I'll Admit That I Really Don't Understand (2:51)
Track No. 2. Riding To Work In The Year 2025 (Your Invisible Now) (7:03)
Track No. 3. Thirty-Five Thousand Feet Of Despair (4:59)
Track No. 4. A Machine In India (10:23)
Track No. 5. The Train Runs Over The Camel But Is Derailed By The Gnat (6:14)
Track No. 6. How Will We Know (Futuristic Crashendos) (2:23)
Track No. 7. March Of The Rotten Vegetables (6:28)
Track No. 8. The Big Ol' Bug Is The New Baby Now (5:05)

How does it work?
Zaireeka can be listened to:
1 CD at a time
2 CDs at a time
3 CDs at a time
4 CDs at a time… each requiring its own CD player and system. That means, to hear all four CDs playing at the same time you must have four separate CD players.

How do you get them to all play together?
To hear, let's say, Track No. 1, put each CD in its player and go to track No. 1, press play and you'll hear it say "Track No. 1" followed by each CD announcing its number. For instance, CD No. 1 will say "This is CD No. 1," CD No. 2 says, "No. 2,", CD No. 3 says, "No. 3", CD No. 4 says, "And No. 4." After hearing "Track No. 1" press pause, while it is paused press skip or automatic search back to the beginning of the track. This is to insure all the CDs are paused at exactly the beginning of the track. Use a kind of "Ready, Set, Go!!!" count-off to get everybody to press play at exactly the same time. (This implies you'll need more than one person.) When all the CDs are engaged properly in synch you should hear all the CDs in unision say "Track No. 1" followed by each CD announcing its number individually. If this start sequence is a jumbled mess, or the CD numbers aren't announced in the right order 1, 2, 3, and 4..you should pause, reverse, and try it again…if the count-off is correct, the selection will begin in a proper state.
Each track should be played using this synchronized starting procedure… also, some tracks have sections of silence.

A combination of the words "Zaire" and "Eureka," Zaireeka is a term coined by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne symbolizing the fusion of anarchy and genius. It's a perfect title; Zaireeka is the culmination of the Lips' helter-skelter brilliance. Pushing the concept of interactive listening into new realms of possibility, the work extends Coyne's infamous "parking lot experiments" into not merely one album, but four separate discs that can be played separately or in groups of two, three, and four with multiple stereos. (Properly synchronized multi-disc playback requires more than one person – it's literally a party album.) Between combining the discs and toying with volume, balance, fidelity, etc., the options are truly limitless. No two multi-disc performances can be repeated, thanks to the space-time continuum and discrepancies from one CD player to another. Musically as well as conceptually, the Lips are defiantly experimental throughout Zaireeka; individually, each disc sounds more like free jazz than pop, although Coyne's diamond-sharp melodic sensibilities prevail even during the most chaotic moments. With each additional disc, the music's force and ingenuity reveals itself: "Riding to Work in the Year 2025 (Your Invisible Now)" is an epic orchestral noise suite, "Thirty-Five Thousand Feet of Despair" is a multi-narrative plane-crash drama remarkably evocative in its depiction of fear and chaos, and "How Will We Know? (Futuristic Crashendos)" features such extreme high and low frequencies that it can lead to disorientation, confusion, or nausea (the track is not recommended to be played while operating a motor vehicle or in the presence of infants). Logistical nightmares aside, Zaireeka is a dense, difficult work, recommended only for the hardiest Flaming Lips fetishists; however, they're in for the musical experience of a lifetime.
