The San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra were a group from the Phillipines funded by the San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts, and released a number of compact discs, including this one in 2004 called Great Filipino Love Songs. They are instrumental cover versions of popular Filipino songs originally sung in Tagalog. Sadly, the group were forced to stop in 2007 when they were told the money would be better spent on sports.
What began as an experiment has turned out to be a success: making Filipino classical music a reality. This CD was a huge seller, achieving "Gold" status in the Phillipines.

In his bid to revolutionize Philippine orchestra, composer and conductor Ryan Cayabyab calls Great Filipino Love Songs, an album by the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra, a wonderful beginning.

"There must be ways to adapt orchestra, which is a western creation, for the Filipino. This will take a long time but the important thing is to make the first big steps," Mr. Cayabyab, who is the executive and artistic director of the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra, told BusinessWorld.

Great Filipino Love Songs includes 14 well-known and beloved pieces composed by Philippine artists. The album covers popular songs from the 1970s and the 1980s and the list includes "Bato sa Buhangin" (music by Ernani Cuenco, and lyrics by Snaffu Rigor); "Maalaala Mo Kaya" (music and lyrics by Constancio de Guzman); "Dahil sa Iyo" (music by Mike Velarde, Jr. and lyrics by Dominador Santiago); and "Ikaw Ang Mahal Ko" (music by Tito Arevalo and lyrics by the late National Artist Levi Celerio).

Mr. Cayabyab gave the public a preview of the album during the March 23 concert at the Ayala Tower One in Makati which commemorated Ayala Foundation Inc.'s Funder's Day. Entitled "Hindi Kita Malimot: The Filipino as Romantic", the activity recognized those who supported the foundation in the past year.

The concert featured the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra rendering nine cuts from the album. The highlight of the night included internationally acclaimed pianist Cecile Licad performing Maurice Ravel's Concerto in G Major. Incoming Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) director Eugene Castillo, renowned abroad like Ms. Licad, conducted the orchestra.

    "IT WILL MAKE YOU SMILE"

"The album celebrates a unique characteristic of Philippine music, our sentimentality," Mr. Cayabyab said. "With the depth and lightness of sentimentality, mapapangiti ka (it will make you smile). Sentimentality would be a jumping point to other aspects that define Philippine music," he added.

Mr. Cayabyab said the album was born by way of a challenge from Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco, Jr., chairman of food and beverage conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC). Mr. Cojuangco had listened to an album of Philippine songs performed by a foreign orchestra. He approached Mr. Cayabyab, saying "You can do better than this. Walang puso ng Pinoy yung pagtutugtog (There is no Filipino heart in the performance)."

"Bato sa Buhangin," a popular song in the 1970s, was selected as the first cut in the album. Mr. Cayabyab knew he had successfully answered the dare when Mr. Cojuangco, who listened to the group rehearsing the song, exclaimed after the performance, "Ayan ang Pinoy (That's Filipino)."

The album represents the direction he wants the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra to take, Mr. Cayabyab pointed out. He said wants to produce songs in Filipino written for the orchestra.

The San Miguel Foundation, which funds the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra, will sponsor contests and workshops for this purpose Mr. Cayabyab announced. These will be held starting this year, he added.

Mr. Cayabyab said he considers the Chinese National Orchestra as a model for Philippine orchestral groups. In a tour of Australia, the Chinese National Orchestra discarded black tuxedos and coattails in favor of Mandarin jackets. They performed classic and popular songs from their country and used indigenous Chinese musical instruments aside from Western instruments.

"The Europeans introduced us to the orchestra, I'm not denying that," Mr. Cayabyab said. "But we should also find ways of adapting this Western concept for the purpose of promoting Filipino culture and identity."

Great Filipino Love Songs was produced under the auspices of the San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts. The musical score was performed by the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra. Arnel Feliciano was the conductor. Mr. Cayabyab was the album's producer and arranger.

The album is distributed for national and international release by BMG Records (Pilipinas).
