Teresa Bright is a Hawaiian singer who regularly records traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music. She studied jazz vocals when she was younger, and occasionally used it on a few of her recordings. This CD, on her own label, allowed her to sing in a manner that is different from her more well known work. The closest person I could compare her to would be Lani Hall (Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66, and wife of Herb Alpert).

I had heard one of these songs on the radio and had to make a purchase. The Japanese version has a bonus track, but I was not able to find it at a reasonable price, so the 10-song Hawaiian CD will have to do.

The CD includes Jerry Martini, a long-time member of Sly & The Family Stone.

Teresa Bright forsakes her Hawaiian roots as she celebrates the emotions of the holidays.

"Carol of the Bells" is mostly an a cappella charmer; "What Child Is This" has a three-quarter-time jazz flavor; "Christmastime Is Here" has a samba-jazzy tone (truly one of the best gifts of the season); "Amazing Grace" is soulful from start to finish.

For simple, quiet joy, examine "Nothing But a Child," with ki ho‘alu eloquence adding to the serenity; for a smoky blues chill, examine "Let It Snow."

This one makes Christmas light up . . . Bright-ly.

End of status report

Teresa Bright has released a fair share of music in her career, some good, some only so-so. It's all about personal taste, and usually when they release a holiday album, those opinions can be laid to rest. How can you hate an album of Christmas tunes, right?

A Christmas Season's Delight comes at a time in Hawaiian music history when jazz has been put in a very dark corner of the closet, or at least "good" jazz. Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom has never been shy of admitting her jazz roots (her debut CD was a jazz recording), but other than that, fans have been faced with a lot of disappointing music. Singing over a piano doesn't always make you jazz, it has a lot to do with the music itself, and how well a vocalist can show their love for it. Hawai'i and jazz has had a terrible affair in the last ten years, almost to the point where it has become a very bad four letter word. Musicians have had to move to the mainland in order to make a living, or in some cases join a swing band. Of course, the swing fad is dying out so…

But what does this have to do with Teresa Bright and a Christmas CD? A lot. Bright often talks about her love of jazz, but never really let it shine completely on any of her releases. This time, she combines jazz and Christmas music into a mix that will hopefully make this an album of mandatory listening in and out of Hawai'i.

Bright multi-tracks her voice in the beautifully done "Carol Of The Bells", where her voice rings out strong in every angle (Manu Boyd can also be heard within the mix). Anyone remember saxophonist Jerry Martini from Sly & The Family Stone? He's living in Hawai'i and playing and performing with everyone, and here he plays a very mellow solo in "Let It Snow", which almost sounds like a Carpenters song complete with xylophone and moog-ish intro. "What Child Is This" sounds like an era gone by, with hints of Masako (Darlene Yoshimoto) beauty in both the music and Bright's vocals. The vibes of Noel Okimoto would make Roy Ayers proud. From American jazz to Brazilian rhythms we travel with "Christmas Time Is Here", and ever wanted to hear ki ho'alu mixed with a classical touch? Listen to "Nothing But A Child" where Harry Koizumi blends his guitar with cellist Nancy Masaki with powerful results, not only strengthening the power of slack key guitar, but Hawaiian music (and musicianship) as a whole.

This album is too good to be limited to a Hawaiian audience. A Christmas Season's Delight has the makings of being a classic Christmas recording, Hawaiian or otherwise. Its combination of many styles only makes this stand out even more, and the production of Kit Ebersbach gets my vote for one of the best produced Hawaiian albums of the year. This album takes Christmas music, and recorded Hawaiian music, to a higher level, which in a way is what Christmas is all about.
