    Genre: Classical | Label: Melodiya | # MEL CD 10 01848

This cycle of preludes and fugues composed by Johann Sebastian Bach ranks tremendously high in the world of music. It is not just one of the immortal masterpieces of the world music literature; it is an encyclopedia of polyphonic art, a handbook for life, and an inexhaustible source of delight. Sviatoslav Richter said, Whenever I set to the Well-Tempered Clavier, I always get consumed with a desire not to exclude any of the sides for the sake of one narrow and dogmatic position. I am confident that Bach can be played in different ways, with different articulation and different dynamics, as long as the whole is preserved and the performance is convincing.

Here is a marvelous, must-have recording of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier (Book One), one that exceeds Richter's own legendary murky 1972/73 recording at Klessheim Castle, Salzburg. The sound may be superior here, but much of the performance remains the same: variation of tempi, dynamics, and sheer bluster between each prelude and fugue, and a contrapuntal mastery and spiritual awareness in this literature that is second to none. For a piano recording of the WTC, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find better – this is a typically mesmerizing Richter recital, one that is only enhanced by the live atmosphere.

Sonically speaking, the live sound in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory is very good throughout, not too close and not too distant. For the most part, the audience is quiet with only a handful of coughs and little rustling; that said, you won't mistake this for a Marc-André Hamelin clinic in the sterilized confines of Henry Wood Hall, and all to the better for it. This is an event, with all of the 'you are there' immediacy and impact one could wish for. Regarding the remastering of the original stereo source, Melodiya seems to have turned a corner in recent years. The work by M. Pilipov is excellent, sounding to me like a 24-bit job, without intrusive noise filtering (e.g. recent historical recordings on the Profil label) and also without the signature 'processed' sound that is the unwanted byproduct of Digital Workstations, à la Supraphon's Karel An'erl Gold Edition and some of EMI's latter-day ART remasters (Maria Callas anyone?). Don't miss this.

Twenty pps. booklet, liner notes in Cyrillic by Yakov Milstein (translated in English by N. Kuznetsov), the final two paragraphs excepted below:

'Whenever I set to The Well-Tempered Clavier, I always get consumed with a desire not to exclude any of the sides for the sake of one narrow and dogmatic position,' Richter said. 'I am confident that Bach can be played in different ways, with different articulation and with different dynamics as long as the whole is preserved, as long as the strict outline of the style remains undistorted, as long as the performance is convincing enough.'

Listening attentively to Richter's execution, it is not difficult to find out two main tendencies in it which confront each other at times. On the one hand, his performance appears to be within the boundaries predetermined by the specifics of clavier art from Bach's time. On the other hand, it constantly deals with phenomena beyond these boundaries. It sort of fuses together Bach's sympathy with the harpsichord, the clavichord and the organ, and his great insights into the future. It brings together elements linear, expressive and structural.
