This Is Stina Nordenstam is an album by Swedish singer-songwriter Stina Nordenstam, released in 2001. It is Nordenstam's only release on Independiente Records. Stina Nordenstam plays guitar, keyboards and sings all vocals, but is joined by Suede lead singer Brett Anderson on the songs "Trainsurfing" and "Keen Yellow Planet". She is also assisted by three musicians, Davey Faragher (bass), Pete Thomas (drums) and Val McCallum (guitar) (Faragher and Thomas have both previously played with Elvis Costello).

The music of Stina Nordenstam encompasses a place most consider private: a hiding place where sorrow flourishes into beauty and wonder. On her first four recordings, her haunted child voice wrapped itself around brooding jazz-pop, chillingly isolated folk, and crushing, heavy slabs of claustrophobic sound. Her fifth release carries all these traits into a breathless 32-minute record that is relentless in its mix of beautiful melodies and layered production. With tech heavies Tchad Blake and Mitchell Froom collaborating with Nordenstam, the sound ebbs and flows moodily–one moment presenting crashing waves of sounds, the next allowing Nordenstam her talent for eliciting the deepest emotions quietly. Suede's Brett Anderson complements Stina nicely with understated vocals, helping add an element both otherworld-spacy and unbashedly poppy. But the core of it all lies with Nordenstam–and her voice, songwriting, and lyrics are at their most eager to please, with the hummable quotient at a peak. On This Is Stina Nordenstam, Nordenstam peeps out of her emotional shell for a bit, while never losing the qualities that keep her music unique.

This Is Stina Nordenstam was received with relief by critics when it was released in 2001. After two difficult albums – one exceedingly dark and distorted and the other full of experimental covers – Nordenstam had returned with a modern pop album. And to further stress that it was pop this time, Brett Anderson from Suede participated on a couple of tracks. The sound of the album still has some in common with the sound of the cover album People Are Strange, applied on original material this time, but everything is more straightforward and the environmental noises are left out. If People Are Strange was twisting popular melodies, breaking them up, and leaving them as experimental compositions, this is more like dressing that same experimental sound in popular melodies. The album also has quite much in common with Nordenstam's critically acclaimed And She Closed Her Eyes from 1994, though the beat is more marked this time. But if more accessible than the former two albums and including tracks like "Lori Glory," which was even played on the radio, This Is in some ways feels like a step backwards. It doesn't have the sheer emotional effect that And She Closed Her Eyes had, and in leaving out some of the things that made People Are Strange difficult, it also left out some of its beauty. But that said, This Is is a very unusual pop album, and its only major drawback is that Nordenstam herself has used the same elements to better results before.
