Stephen Hartke is widely recognised as one of the leading composers of his generation. His individual voice is marked by a sense for melody and colour that follows in the tradition of Bartók and Messiaen. This collection offers the listener different sides of Hartke’s chamber music performed by one of America’s premiere chamber ensembles, the Los Angeles Piano Quartet. The surreal trio The Horse with the Lavender Eye of 1997 and the four selections from Post-modern Homages for solo piano here receive their premiere recording. The Sonata is a vivid three-movement work for solo piano while The King of the Sun, written for the Los Angeles Piano Quartet, takes its inspiration from paintings by Miró.

Composer Stephen Hartke is not a familiar name, but the performers on this disc give a selection of his chamber music and solo piano music all the attention usually reserved for well-loved classics. Led by pianist Xak Bjerken, the opening work, The Horse with the Lavender Eye for violin, clarinet, and piano, has a witty seriousness, while the closing The King of the Sun for violin, viola, cello, and piano, reveals a more sonically evocative side of Hartke's style. On his own, Bjerken proves a persuasive interpreter. His sonata has an irresistible flow and his readings of selections from Post-modern Homages are often very funny, as in the Gymnopédie No. 4, and sometimes quite moving, as in Sonatina DCXL. Written in a not altogether tonal and yet not altogether post-tonal style with dashes of post-modernism and neo-romanticism and a fair-sized helping of inspiration, Hartke's music is ideal for listeners who want emotionally engaging and intellectually appealing new music. Chandos' digital sound is clear, deep, and vivid.

    Review by James Leonard, Allmusic.com

Stephen Hartke (b1952) has enjoyed limited exposure this side of the Atlantic (though a New World disc of his Second Symphony and Violin Concerto is well worth seeking out), so this Chandos miscellany should redress the balance in favour of one whose stylistic range and unpredictability are as intriguing as they are provocative.

The Piano Sonata (1998) is the most impressive work here because the most focused in material: a lengthy Scherzo, resourcefully integrating minimalist and dance elements, prepared for by an expansively chordal Prelude then distilled into a limpid Postlude. Few composers have expressed this much so understatedly through this genre in recent times, and the chamber works are hardly less absorbing. The Horse with the Lavender Eye (1997) features some appealingly surreal imagery and expressive sleights of hand, notably the final left-footed Rumba whose emotionally distanced epilogue has droll inevitability, while The King of the Sun (1988) maintains a certain rhythmic consistency over increasingly anarchic musical imagery before an apotheosis of nonchalant matter-of-factness. Any from the selection of Post-Modern Homages would make an instructive encore – postmodern in the original “what might happen if”, rather than the current “who cares anyway” sense of the term.

The performances are precise and probing, abetted by lucid sound and a booklet-note from Xak Bjerken that offers context and poses questions in equal measure. Those who see the Coen brothers rather than Steven Spielberg as being representative of modern American culture will find much to ponder on and enjoy here.
