The Soft Machine's early days as a slightly skewed psychedelic pop band tearing itself in the opposing directions formulated by founding members Kevin Ayers, Daevid Allen, Robert Wyatt, and Mike Ratledge need little introduction – they have, after all, been anthologized across so many different compilations and collections that it seems hard to believe there ever was a time when they were considered "rare." Throughout the 1970s, however, the only source for this treasure trove of demos, outtakes, and visions in waiting was a pair of French import albums within BYG's poorly annotated Rock Generation series and Charly's equally slapdash At the Beginning – slapdash because, beyond the most basic lineup and production credits, little here exists to inform you that this is by no means The Soft Machine you might be expecting. Rather, the band's 1967-1968 demos – caught on tape by legendary producer Giorgio Gomelsky – exist in a queer netherworld caught, indeed, between its makers' own future doings. "Stanley Stamp's Gibbon Collection" it isn't! It is important, however, to remember that these tracks were recorded only as demos, a heritage that is apparent from both the sound quality and the somewhat uncertain arrangements. Foreboding hints of Ayers and Allen's future work do percolate through the tapes, but the Softs' subsequent grasp of jazz-rock is here sublimated beneath a more slapdash approach to mere psychedelic jamming. There are, nevertheless, some invigorating moments to be found – "Memories," "Save Yourself," and "Jet Propelled Photograph" all rate highly amid this lineup's greatest triumphs, while Ayers' "She's Gone" was sufficiently highly thought of to be mooted as the band's second single (following on from the flop "Love Makes Sweet Music"). In the event, that release (produced by Joe Boyd) would never happen – it would be another decade before the recording was released on the Triple Echo anthology. But Gomelsky's original demo, included here, has a charm of its own, one that is spread far enough across the rest of the album to establish this among many fans' very favorite episodes within the entire Softs soap.
