In the 41 - year gap between these two sonatas Fauré, increasingly beset by deafness, withdrew into a more private, recondite world all his own. The Second, in consequence, has never enjoyed the popularity of the First—and in fact was conspicuous by its absence from the CD catalogue until this welcome new release. Collectors may recall that when Lydia Mordkovitch and Gerhard Oppitz recorded the First for Chandos they preferred to couple it with Richard Strauss's early Sonata in E flat.
Comparison of the two teams in the A major Sonata, Op. 13, leaves me in no doubt that the newcomers would be my first choice. In saying that, I don't want to underestimate Mordkovitch. But with her fine-spun, silken tone and sensitively tapered phrasing she is far too often overpowered by Oppitz, who in the resonant acoustic of St Luke's Church, Chelsea, emerges not only too loud but also rather too often the victim of his own over-generously used right pedal. The Cologne venue accorded to Mintz and Bronfman is kinder: though anything but timid Bronfman preserves far greater textural clarity, and never allows his piano to outweigh Mintz's violin unless at the composer's own behest. The newcomers, in fact, seem the more closely attuned of the two teams, not just to each other but also to the fluid Fauré himself. Certainly their marginally faster tempo for the first and last movements comes nearer to the requested allegro molto and allegro quasi presto. I also thought their Scherzo more mercurial.
More ambiguous though its emotional connotations may be, the E minor Sonata comes across no less persuasively and stylishly. The first movement's contrasts of disquiet and lyrical calm merge in an unbroken flow. The slow movement's self-generating melody unfolds, beautifully shaped, with a similar seamless continuity. I'm really surprised this CD hasn't yet been reviewed, as I was under the impression that this great 1990 recording of the two Faure sonatas is pretty famous.
If you don't know the two Violin Sonatas by Gabriel Faure, I urge you to give yourself the treat you deserve and listen to them as soon as you can. The first violin sonata dates from the beginning of Faure's career (1876) and is one of the most beautiful chamber works I have ever heard. It rates right up there with the very best Romantic chamber music - flowing, passionate, attractive. The second sonata is a more complex work in three movements dating from late in Faure's career (1917), when the composer was afflicted by encroaching deafness and surrounded by the deep tragedy of the first world war. While the first sonata is immediately attractive, the second sonata has taken me repeated listenings to understand it, but I now believe it is a stunning work. The last minute or so of the finale is the culmination of all that has gone before it, with themes from earlier movements brought back in cyclical fashion, and it is breathtaking and powerful music. I think you will love both sonatas.
The performance by Shlomo Mintz and Yefim Bronfman is just excellent. Mintz is one of the best violinists of his generation and he plays with restraint and nuance when needed, and aggressiveness and passion when that is required. Based on his many excellent chamber recordings with Isaac Stern, Yefim Bronfman is an outstanding pianist for this type of repertory and he confirms that opinion with a wonderful interpretation here.
