Pianist Sergio Monroy was born in 1980 in the neighborhood of Mentidero in Cádiz. Even as a boy, he combined his liking for flamenco - listening to cantaores like Chano Lobato, Felipe Escapachinni, Juan Villar and Rancapino - with his studies at Manuel de Falla Conservatory. Next, he studies flamenco piano in Madrid with Arturo Pavón and Antonio Escobar Pereira. He offered his first recital at Mentidero Square at the festival Fiestas del Carmen 1997. Later on, he takes part in several flamenco encounters until he performed solo at the Sala Central Lechera in Cádiz with Miguel Poveda in June 2000. The cantaor invites him to accompany him on piano at Xátiva’s 4th International Festival. Late in the year, he gives a concert at the Taberna Flamenca La Cava in Cádiz, from which a recording is taken for the live collective album ‘La Cava. Jóvenes Flamencos de Cádiz’. Sergio Monroy is then called on by the María Serrano Company as a flamenco pianist and composer, which he works with on an international tour. In 2003 he releases his first album, ‘Monroy’, which reflects his musical restlessness with regards to flamenco and jazz. He has collaborations on the recording by musicians such as Javier Ruibal and Miguel Poveda. From then on he shapes a stable group to do the album’s live tour with. The official presentation took place at the Fine Arts Circle in Madrid on September 22nd. The record is showcased at forums such as the Vic Live Music Festival, Cádiz Spanish Music Festival, El Monte’s Flamenco Thursdays, at the University of Seville. Outside of Spain, at the Evernaar Theater in Rotterdam and La Línea Festival in London. Moreover, he collaborates with baile companies such as those of Javier Latorre, Andrés Marín and Ángeles Gabaldón, besides with groups influenced by flamenco such as El Barrio and Maíta Vende Cá. On November 1st, 2008 at La Carbonería in Seville, he presents his second solo album, ‘Chicuco’, including the collaboration of artists like Encarna Anillo, El Junco and Bernardo Parrilla.
