Scott Hamilton and Duško Gojković, two excellent jazz players, joined together for this CD and recorded a couple of beautiful standards. Hamilton recorded with the Bernhard Pichl Trio back in 2009 resulting in the CD How About You. With this session, Hamilton is paired with Gojković and the proceedings are solid. Gojković’s blend of tone and style on trumpet and flugelhorn is elegant, mellow and hot. On ballads, and with the mute in (as on “Angel Eyes”), Gojković is quintessential 1950s cool. Hamilton is as keen as ever with his fluid, swinging ideas and full tone. The recording is first rate and tends to place the piano playing of Pichl in a slightly more favourable light than on the How About You session. The bonus of exploring Hamilton’s recordings is that listeners get introduced to so many fine rhythm trios along the way and this German trio is something new. Drummer Michael Keul is light, crisp and nimble up top but has a fat bottom end when pulling out the stops and an unusual sounding cymbal (an inside out Chinese cymbal) that adds extra timbrel colour to his palette. His fast and furious exchanges are precision timed, delivering a big and flexible sound. Tight But Loose is a fine programme and is a nice follow up to the previous get together of Hamilton and the Pichl trio. Europeans have always responded positively to jazz music; these recordings continue an enduring, creative legacy. In total, well recorded and good playing from all musicians concerned but not overexciting. ~Allmusic
