German Medieval Metallers of Saltatio Mortis always had been a rather two-edged sword for me. Just looking back at their previous effort Erwachen, they had a few really good songs, but also quite a few fillers, even further hindered by the use of a drum computer, so when their latest album Aus Der Asche dropped into my lap, I was not exactly super-enthused.
But somehow the gentlemen seem to have done some thinking, because even though they have not really changed anything in their music, the new disc has fire, spark and everything else as well. For beginners, Thoron Trommelfeuer has been added to the line-up, meaning a real drummer, which clearly shows, giving the songs an a lot more organic sound. Furthermore the overall level of quality also has risen, so they really spent a lot more time on the song writing, which should bring SALTATIO MORTIS a lot more appreciation among the fans.
One thing that basically all songs have in common is a very high level of catchiness, which will enable you to sing along with many of the songs right off the bat (obviously it helps, if you speak German, but even if you dont, you'll feel compelled to just let go). The guys also seem to have found a better balance between the Metal and the Middle Age, resulting in a more cohesive whole, as everything is meshed together better.
Spielmannsschwur has this certain sassy attitude to it, with a calmer verse and a more powerful chorus, while Sieben Raben is maybe the albums highlight, at first dark, then stomping and intense, I love it! Vaulfen takes a different approach with Swedish lyrics, some choir (which is very well executed, too!) and even the ballad Irgendwo In Meinem Geiste convinces, something that I have had my problems with in the past. Even though the other songs also are between good and very good, I just want to point out Choix Des Dames, which is completely medieval, with mouthharp, percussion and some sort of trumpet and a very bad German accent within the French lyrics, but still sounds great to me!
Aus Der Asche definitely is the bands best album to date and with bands such as In Extremo etc. moving further away from their roots, I can definitely recommend SALTATIO MORTIS to all medieval buffs out there. ~metal-observer
