SOUL WALKER series 8th WALK ultimate paper jacket collection, 5 titles OV Wright, Ann Peebles, Exit 9 & The Chi-Lites

A lean, tough set that was not only a triumph for Peebles, but illustrated how the Hi label had surpassed its crosstown Stax rival for quality Memphis soul in the early '70s. The guitars are spare, funky, and bluesy, the horn section punchy, and the material far earthier and down-home than the increasingly formulaic grooves at Stax. There were three modest R&B hits on the album ("Slipped, Tripped and Fell in Love," "I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home," "Somebody's on Your Case"), much of which was penned by Peebles or her husband Don Bryant. Peebles' vocals were convincingly biting, and she never, unlike many other singers of the era, tried too hard for her own good. The main flaw of the record is its length (26 minutes), which was short even by early-'70s standards. [AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger]

"Behind the talents of Eugene Record, the Chi-Lites presented an impeccable album featuring one gem after another. Not losing any steam from their previous album, the Chi-Lites plugged another number one song, the universally appealing "Oh Girl," which also claimed the number one spot on the pop charts. "Coldest Days of My Life" came with a placid arrangement and peaked at number eight, and "Lonely Man" was a humble extension of "Have You Seen Her." From the testimonial "Living in the Footsteps of Another Man" to the mid-tempo "Being in Love" to the ballad "Love Is," the Chi-Lites were flawless with this effort. Record is masterful with his articulation of the lyric; he stays in control of his vocals. His penmanship is phenomenal and his production skills are irreproachable. The only socially charged number is a remake of the Marvin Gaye classic "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," and it's done with skillful execution.

The one and only album by Exit 9, an obscure funk combo who recorded this rare set for Brunswick in 1975. The group is extremely tight instrumentally, working at a very fast funky clip that's kind of similar to work by Bohannon or Sound Experience, both of whom shared Exit 9's pre-disco approach to dancefloor grooves. Most numbers have vocals, and instrumentation includes lots of nice guitar work that keeps a rawer edge on the tracks! Tracks include MFB, Miss Funky Fox, Fly, Julie I Love You, Jive Man, and Rhapsody in Funk.

Second in a series of three Hi studio albums, O.V. Wright was finally allowed to record for Willie Mitchell's own label, since his former employer, Don Robey, had sold Backbeat to ABC in 1973. As was the case with Al Green, Mitchell had developed a longtime friendship with Wright, overseeing most of his Backbeat single sides and albums. Come the end of the '70s the famous Hi sound started to lose a little of its tightness, but this is fairly overcome by Wright's exceptional vocal qualities. The Bottom Line wasn't crafted with the same session men as it's predecessor. Mostly made up of ballads, the single "I Don't Do Windows" stands apart as the only up-tempo exception. Bobby Womack's "That's the Way I Feel About Cha" gets a nice Southern soul makeover. A "late night jazz bar everybody gone home contemplative" "I Don't Know Why" is similar to a lesser known Stevie Wonder track, coincidentally of the same name. The shimmering "A Little More Time" deserves special mention: starting out as a roll call of soul singers who had died way before their time, it's a tribute of prophetic proportions. Soon enough Wright would join their league. Many compilations of his Hi output were released throughout the second half of the '90s. Both Hi Masters and That's How Strong My Love Is collect almost everything of this album and its predecessor, Into Something (Can't Shake Loose). The Complete O.V. We’re Still Together, like his two previous albums for Hi was recorded at Royal Recording Studios and Allied Recording Studios, with Willie Mitchell producing the album. It had been all change at Hi, with familiar faces leaving, being replaced by new personnel. One of the changes was the new Hi Rhythm Section and augmenting The Memphis Horns, were members of The South Memphis Horns. Another change was that backing singers Rhodes, Chalmers, Rhodes only appeared on one track, I’m Gonna Stay. Previously, they’d been a permanent fixture at Hi, their backing vocals gracing the best albums on Hi. This was just the latest change at Hi, which was undergoing a number of changes after being taken over.
What didn’t change was the standard of songs for O.V. to record, with Earl Randle contributing six of the tracks with a variety of songwriting partners. One of these was Willie Mitchell, with whom he’d written a number of great track. Their collaboration was I’m Gonna Stay, which closed side one of We’re Still Together. James Shaw collaborated with Earl on two songs, I Found Peace and The Hurt Is One. The nine songs on We’re Still Together were a combination of Southern Soul, with a sprinkling of funk. This was an intriguing and quite brilliant combination.
