One of the best all-star sessions ever produced by the legendary Creed Taylor. Actually, this album represented the ressurrection of the CTI label in 1990. Digitally recorded and filmed (in High Definition) "live" at Van Gelder's studio, features such stars as Dizzy Gillespie, Airto, Flora Purim, Anthony Jackson, Art Farmer, John Scofield, and Phil Woods, who play together in such outstanding tracks like Michel Camilo's "Caribe" and Salif Keita's "Wamba", all arranged by Benny Golson. If possible, besides purchasing the CD version, which includes Toninho Horta's haunting ballad "Waiting for Angela" as bonus track, try to get the video version. To listen to this album is a joy. But watching the video you'll feel in heaven!Review by Bob Matthews
Although Dizzy Gillespie gets top billing on this CD, he only appears on two of the ten selections and does not make much of an impression. More significant to the mixed success of this Caribbean-flavored date are the solos of trumpeter Art Farmer, altoist Phil Woods and Bob Berg on tenor. Flora Purim also has a few vocals and the rhythm section (which changes from track to track) has some interesting names. But in general the results are not that memorable and the improvisations are less stirring than one would hope.Review by Scott Yanow, Allmusic.com
