Making contemporary progressive rock, using the instruments and sounds of the golden era in progressive music, was the main idea behind the RETROHEADS concept.

It started out as one mans dream about a band that could tribute the free spirits of the past, not as copycats, but by adapting the way to think and make music without limits, borders, restrictions, expectations and commercial angles. In other words: with creative freedom.

And the dream came true:

With the release of “Retrospective” in 2004, on Unicorn Records in Canada, the path was set for the future. The album was very well received by the progressive rock community, receiving great reviews and feedback from all parts of the world.

There have been some changes in the bands line up over the years.

The band has developed and matured since the early days in 2002/2003, and consists now of 7 musicians all coming from various backgrounds; jazz, pop, rock and world-music.

And the future is here now, with the much acclaimed album “Introspective” released in 2006.

In 2007, RETROHEADS will tour Europe, the US and Canada playing clubs and festivals.

The RETROHEADS-project was started in 2003 by Tore after he had been working several years as a commercial music- and sound-producer for radio and TV in Norway.

The band now consists of 5 musicians with various musical backgrounds; from jazz, pop and rock to African and world-music. 5 musicians who all share the same vision that music must be made and performed without limits, borders, restrictions or commercial angles. In other words : With creative freedom ! The RETROHEADS are no copycats of the past, although the band uses instruments with significant sounds and links to the 70's, like the Hammond B3, Mellotron, ARP, MiniMoog and Taurus bass pedals. They use the latest available technology and VST instruments to emulate the real thing. After all; It's not the way you create music that matters, It's the way you think!

Two words that possible describe this album…. Pleasant Surprise!!!
Retroheads/Retrospective are not as "Retro" as I thought they would! I do believe is a good and strong debut. No major surprises, or complexity; but they do not sound derivative either…that is why I gave 4 instead of 3 stars!!

Very nice Modern Symphonic use of "Golden Era" Instrumentation (Mellotron/Mini Moog/Bass Pedals, etc..); I especially enjoyed the long Instrumentation passages with a definitive spacey feel!!

Two tracks stand out IMO "Judgment day" and "Taking my Time"; both Guitar driven tracks (ala Claude Mignon of Seven Reizh, another fantastic release!!), with plenty of Synth collaboration!! Overall, nice male and female vocals, with an Alan Parson's Project aftertaste.

It will be interesting to find out where they move from here, on their next output. Meanwhile, I probably enjoy several spins on this one…a slow grower to say the least.

The debut CD Retrospective (2004) by Canadian seven piece band Retroheads got many positive reactions so I was very curious this new effort. After a first listening session I quickly concluded that Retroheads has matured in writing and they sound more original, even a bit wayward. For me this new CD is one big musical adventure, a fascinating blend of several styles with an omnipresent 'vintage keyboard sound' like the powerful Hammond organ, different 'classical' synthesizers and especially the majestic Mellotron. The compositions contain many adventurous musical ideas and lots of interesting moments like great interplay between Hammond and strong vocals along synthesizer flights, slide guitar, Moog Taurus bass pedals and Mellotronin the alternating and intense Living In A Bubble, a slow rhythm with moving wah-wah drenched guitar, Hammond waves and fat synthesizers in Black Hole Eyes and acoustic guitar, sensitive piano and vocals, a mid-tempo piece and lush keyboards in I Turn To You. The other compositions are also very alternating (from spacey and dreamy to fluent and bombastic) and feature lots of good soli on keyboards and guitar and strong vocals. Their sound on this new CD is not always accessible because of the many styles and frequent shifting moods but if you like a special progrock adventure with great vintage keyboards, this one could be yours!
