Nordic folk-jazz chanteuse Rebekka Bakken was the most successful exponent of a new generation of Scandinavian jazz singers that also included Silje Nergaard, Sidsel Endresen, and Solveig Slettahjell. On this album Rebekka interprets the songs of Tom Waits.
This is an album that, on face value, should be an odds-on, favored-to-fail release, in spite of Norwegian chanteuse Bakken’s impressive back catalog of sophisticated chamber-jazz material. On Little Drop of Poison, Bakken, backed by the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, throws aside her reticence and jumps into a set of songs by American iconoclast Tom Waits – whose sound is about as far from Bakken’s cool as you can get. Waits is a former barroom-style, singer-songwriter who now can barely manage to croak out a vocal. However, his gritty poetry explores all manner of quirky, downtrodden characters populating lives of loss, bad choices, and bad luck, and even with his limited melodic palette, Waits manages to elicit the humanity in even the darkest survivor. Bakken, pushing her voice to the rougher side, takes these stories and makes each one come alive. From the haunting ache of “Broken Bicycles,” the yearning for an elusive reconciliation in “If I Have to Go,” the wanderlust of “I Wish I Was in New Orleans,” the world-weary lies and laments of “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis” – the emotions pour out of each and every song here, making you feel exactly what the narrator is trying to relate. The singer and the songs meld as one. And, as if the first fifteen tracks aren’t vivid enough, the closer, “What’s He Building?,” gets downright creepy, as Bakken obsesses, in an anguished whisper, about a neighbor whose secrets remain closed to her stalking behaviors.
