Ray Bonneville's unique musical artistry is a blend of funky, foot-stomping tunes framing rich story-songs, anchored by his smoldering guitar and harmonica talents. The infectiously groove-laden GOIN BY FEEL finds Bonneville stretching into new territory with gritty production and raw Americana instrumentation in a sonic masterwork featuring the finest writing of his career.

For his sixth album, Canadian singer/songwriter Ray Bonneville went into the studio with producer Gurf Morlix, and it turned out to be an inspired choice. Goin' by Feel has a loose, darkly funky vibe that's an ideal match for Bonneville's rich, blues-influenced guitar work, and the spare but resonant interplay between the guitars and the clanky, rattling percussion beds fits these songs like the proverbial glove. While Goin' by Feel sounds full and satisfying, Bonneville and Morlix have actually pared the arrangements back to the essentials – one cut, "What Katy Did," is just Bonneville and drummer Geoff Arsenault – and the lack of gingerbread makes the songs work all the better, letting Bonneville's guitar leads and strong, smoky vocals take the center stage where they belong. Bonneville has also written a fine batch of tunes for this disc, dotted with telling details and vivid imagery, and "Crow John," "Cemetery Road," and "Carry the Fallen" rank with his personal best, while "I Am the Big Easy" is a tribute to New Orleans that captures the Crescent City's rough and tumble soul without becoming maudlin. Ray Bonneville has been writing fine songs and making good records for some time, but with Goin' by Feel he's made an album with a sound every bit as distinctive as his material, and this deeply atmospheric late-late session captures the man at the top of his form; if you haven't checked him out before, this is a great place to start.

Review by Mark Deming, Allmusic.com

This is a Canadian artist that has tapped into a gritty blues groove shuffle that is very similar to the groove know as the Tulsa Shuffle made popular by the iconic J.J. Cale, with just a touch of the New Orleans funk added in to give it some added spice and heat. That said, though it is derivative, it is also an extension and a pushing of the boundaries to other levels. His songs have the feel that is similar to walking on gravel in bare feet, you have to be careful where you put your feet or one of the sharp points is going to jab you, but if you take your time the feel is invigorating like a deep firm foot massage. That is a major key to appreciating the masterful storytelling and wit of this Canadian songwriter who has assimilated more than enough of the American Myths to be able to make good comments about what he has seen and felt in the lower 48. He is also a very accomplished guitar player and adds a funky harmonica that he uses to set off his smoke cured voice.

He is aided on this disc by a very tight band that includes such stalwarts as Gurf Morlix on bass, guitar, percussion and harmony vocals, Rick Richards or Geoff Arsenault on drums, Eliza Gilkyson on harmony vocals and Nick Connolly on keys, and Brad Hays on guitar. The overall feel is that smoky bar with a gritty floor and dim lights that give imagination inducing shadows backed some of the slinkiest rough edged guitar around. A very solid sophomore effort that show great growth.
