This ‘themed’ programme by Da Pacem derives from a series of concerts devoted to Bach’s infamous journey on foot to hear Buxtehude play. Did he have leave of absence from his employers? Did the four month absence change his style for ever? Buxtehude achieved a staggering synthesis of the polyphonic, numerical and rhetorical traditions of his predecessors with a very personal poetry, taking care to make his music accessible to everyone, from the specialist to the layman. It is not surprising that Bach took him as his model.

    Composer: Dietrich Buxtehude
    Performer: Raphaële Kennedy
    Orchestra/Ensemble: Da Pacem

Reviews: The major interest of this program is the first recording of Fallax mundus , a cantata on the deceits of the world, but it is only part of a larger scheme in which each of the five cantatas represents a rhetorical device. The same five devices are also found in the structure of one cantata alone, O Gottes Stadt , while the four instrumental works provide digressions during the discourse—the Praeludium a solo on Yannick Varlet’s harpsichord and the Ciacona and Passacaglia transcribed from organ pieces. All this philosophical theory fills up the notes at the expense of any discussion of the music itself, but we have been forewarned by the subtitle of the disc, Musical Alchemy.

We now have more than 90 of the 120 cantatas of Dietrich Buxtehude in a discography that dates back to 1937 or so. The newest addition to the list has the sort of Pietistic text that can only be appreciated in terms of the Lutheran theology of its time, with a musical setting a little too lively to suit it. The Klag-Lied, the second part of BuxWV 76, has been recorded frequently, but never with all seven strophes (here just the first and last) and seldom with the preceding Trauer-Ode.

Raphaële Kennedy is an effective vocal interpreter. She is credited with the direction of the ensemble along with organist Pierre-Adrien Charpy, one of the half-dozen members of the group, most of whom play modern copies of period instruments (if not originals). Clearly, a lot of thought went into this program, which should repay the deeper attention that a study of Charpy’s notes will encourage. Charpy calls attention to the fine recorded sound, benefitting from silent organ blowers and enhanced by birds and the weather (none of which I noticed). This is well worth hearing.
