Flautists tend to know that Quantz gave flute lessons to Frederick the Great and that he wrote about 300 concertos for the instrument. Only a few of these concertos have been easily accessible in print or on disc. However, in this welcome recording of five Quantz concertos, flautist Rachel Brown seems the perfect ambassador to bring a few of these unfamiliar but intriguing works back into the repertoire. Whether playing a Baroque-inspired fugue, a more ‘classically styled’ Allegro or languid slow movement, Brown’s daring expression and technical brilliance – together with the Brandenburg Consort’s focused sound and racy pace – seem intuitive. Quantz and Brown appear together again, briefly, in Concert in Sanssouci. ‘Sans souci’ means ‘without worry’, and was the name of Frederick the Great’s country house near Potsdam. A certain joie de vivre is in the air in this recreation of a typical evening’s concert chez Frederick. The Hanover Band, under Roy Goodman, plays with real spirit, although Nathalie Stutzmann’s rich contralto lends a more melancholic feel in arias by CH Graun. Although Frank de Bruine is a rather understated soloist in the CPE Bach oboe concerto, the band’s dynamic interpretations and composer’s inventiveness win through.

Review by Kate Sherriff, BBC Music Magazine

Quantz’s posthumous fame has always rested with his treatise On Playing the Flute and with the fact that he was Frederick the Great’s favourite musician. That his flute music should hold much interest in itself is not so often considered, since it suffers from the dual handicap of being both a vast output (which always puts people off) and a conservative one. Three hundred years after the composer was born, however, this last fact need not worry us any more than it has done Rachel Brown, who has spent a good deal of time searching through manuscripts in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. Her efforts have paid off in this well-executed and entertaining selection of five of Quantz’s 300-odd flute concertos. As she herself says in an excellent booklet-note, Quantz was “no Mozart or Haydn”, but his music is affable and soundly constructed, and there is enough stylistic variety to remind us that, while his concertos are unquestionably in the formal mould of Vivaldi, his career overlapped with those of more recognizably pre-classical – and indeed operatic – figures such as Hasse and Graun.

Brown’s performances are as expert in their combination of strength and elegance as we have come to expect from her, and she uses a copy of a flute made by Quantz himself which produces a caressingly dark tone, especially in the lower reaches (try out its mellow blend with muted strings in the slow movement of the C minor Concerto, or its duet with bassoon in that of the G minor, to see what I mean). The Brandenburg Consort’s accompaniments are bright and energetic, with Roy Goodman directing some from the harpsichord and some from the fortepiano, the latter being a departure from the norm which gives a pleasing extra bounce to the texture but is perhaps a shade over-represented in the balance. This may not be gripping music, but it and its performers certainly make engaging company.'
