Public Places is the 2000 album by drummer/vocalist Russell Simins. Released by Grand Royal, Simins is known as the drummer for a number of rock groups, including The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Honeymoon Killers, and Butter 08. This was his only solo album in his entire career, and features people helping him out, including Vivian Trimble, Mike Mills, Michael Diamond, Miho Hatori, Chyna Phillips, and Bijou Phillips.
A lot of people know of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, but when it comes to membership, most can only name the band's namesake, Mr. Spencer himself. So obviously, Russell Simins, JSBX drummer and New York hipster mainstay, doesn't have a big enough name to justify releasing a solo record as a way to placate his ego. It seems more likely that Simins has a lot more music in his head than his big name, bill-paying gig allows him to express, and in fact, one listen to Public Places reveals Simins' interest in a lot of different kinds of music.
It's not necessarily a schizophrenic album, but the only thread that exists from one tune to another is the fact that they all came from the creative mind of Simins. The spacey, hopped-up dub rock intro and first tune, "I'm Not a Model," is a far cry from the pop-y, acoustic-laden "Jim's Problem" and the ballad "Comfortable Place." Of course, there's also the Blues Explosion-like - but only slightly so - songs like the title track; the heavy-treading thick beats of "No 90210"; the pop punk of "World Over"; and the post-millennial Beck-esque "Feel That Emotion."
Public Places is indeed an eclectic record, a collection of songs that may or may not go over with the masses. But whatever the end result, this album does paint Simins as a prolific musician capable of much more than just playing the drums behind Jon Spencer.
