This recording presents twelve orchestral concerti grossi by Francesco Geminiani, which are based on the Op.5 sonatas for solo violin by his teacher, Archangelo Corelli. They are more than arrangements or orchestrations: they are explorations, expansions, the end product of a process of musical evolution.

    Classical | Exact Audio Copy (ape+cue+no log)+scans | 1CD/345MB | RS.com

    Royal Suites
Besides his innumerable cantatas and his Tafelmusik, Telemann devoted himself with enormous skill to the writing of Ouvertüren, the orchestral suites in the French style which were so much esteemed in the kingdom of Frederick II. Some of them have even kept their French titles, like the unambiguously descriptive La Chasse, or La Musette. Others, like the Suite tragi-comique and the Overture in D major have acquired genuine popularity. All of them bear witness to the exceptional technical skills possessed by Telemann, the most famous composer in Baroque Germany during the first half of the 18th century.

    Alla Venetiana [HMU907215] Paul O'Dette
    Classical | Exact Audio Copy (ape+cue+no log)+scans | 1CD/292MB | RS.com

Employing the newly-developed 15th century finger technique which enabled a single lutenist to play dazzling three- and four-part polyphonic passages for the first time, the early 16th century music on this recording was experimental, even avant garde for its day, causing a contemporary to comment: "Surely the pieces which are notated in this book contain in them as much harmony as the musical art is able to express." Paul O'Dette, whose "technique and sensitivity never fail to astound," (Stereophile) brings this music to life.
