Chant Grégorien [HMA190235.37] Alfred Deller & Deller Consort
    Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 3CD/1.0GB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

Alfred Deller usually is credited with single-handedly bringing about the revival of interest in early music in this century. The music on these '70s-era recordings is about as early as you can get, originating as early as the 10th century, and much of it used in liturgical functions until recent times. Rather than just a collection of random chants, Deller and his choir of seven male voices offer several programs organized into themes, some of which are wedding music, chants to the Virgin, and funeral elegies. Also included on this three-disc set is a complete mass, procession music for Vespers, and a Medieval liturgical drama, the "Prague Easter Play." These fine singers are well suited to ensemble performance–although aficionados of chant may question the prominence of the countertenor voices, namely Deller and his son, in this repertoire.

Marcello: Sonates pour Flute [HMA190974] René Clemencic
    Classical | EAC APE+CUE-LOG | 1CD/345MB | Small Front Cover+Booklet | RS.com

    Venetian pleasures

This recording is a must for baroque music-lovers. These sonatas are simply exquisite examples of refined Venetian music. Benedetto Marcello was as well known in his day as his now more famous contemporary, Antonio Vivaldi, if antything this recording should set the record straight and give us an opportunity to appreciate this wonderful composer. There are more surprises and unexpected turns in his compositions than the more classical Vivaldi sonatas, the difference being Marcello did not have to please the general public, he was considered an amateur composer, and as a member of the Venetian aristocracy, he had the advantage of abiding strictly by his own rules. There is great freedom of invention here, as well as a more substantial sensuality to this music, and one can easily imagine these sonatas having a receptive audience in the most select Venetian palazzi as well as the salons of its most cultivated courtesans.

Rene Clemencic et ses flutes [HMA190384] Rene Clemencic
    Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/204MB | Covers+Tracklist | RS.com

    Another Noteworthy Clemencic Recording

Here Rene Clemencic ~ conductor, composer, flute virtuoso and musicologist extraordinaire ~ introduces us to some stellar, challenging, delightfully obscure Middle Age / Renaissance / Baroque works for flutes. An entire array of flutes, featuring no less than 21 members of the recorder family plus pipes and instruments fashioned from horns and reeds.

Works by von Reuenthal, Susato, Castello, Boismortier, the ubiquitous anonymous and others display the complete range of these astonishing instruments and spotlights the incredible virtuosity of Clemencic and his Consort. The liner notes written by Dr. Clemencic detail the instruments used on this CD and how they're played, plus he helpfully places them within their historical timeframe.

Rene Clemencic unerringly produces recordings of note, most every one unique, informative and unfailingly superb. His awards prove this. He's recipient of the Edison, the Grand Prix du disque, Diapason d'Or, Prix Cecilia, ffff Telerama, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Timbre de Platine among others.

I'd snap up as many of Dr. Clemencic's discs as I could.
