    Saint-Saens’s Etudes offer an intricate and scintillating panoply of the French school of technique (the basis and prophecy of what Jean-Philippe Collard so mischievously called Marguerite Long’s ‘diggy-diggy-dee’ school of piano playing). Yet as Piers Lane tells us in his alternately wry and delightful accompanying essay (obligatory reading for all lovers of French pianism), they can be as evocative (‘Les cloches de las Palmas’) as they are finger-twisting (‘En forme de valse’, to name but one). The left-hand Etudes, too, given their self-imposed limitation, are a fragile and poetic surprise. In other words Saint-Saens’s Etudes are more comprehensive than their equivalents by, say, Moszkowski or Lazare Levey (superbly recorded by Ilana Vered on Connoisseur Society and Danielle Laval on French EMI, respectively – neither issued in the UK).

    Piers Lane’s performances may not make ears wag or eyes stand out on stalks (DJF’s ‘boggle factor’) but they are unfailingly fluent and stylish, offered, as it were, with an equanimity that refuses to be ruffled by so many dizzying and prolonged demands. If he cannot make light of the Prelude and Fugue from Op. 52 (its insistent whirl of alternating thirds intended to strike down even the most intrepid pianist with St Vitus dance) with Cherkassky’s inimitable bravura (HMV – nla) or compare with Cortot’s cruelly nonpareil aplomb in ‘En forme de valse’, his way of confiding rather than flaunting Saint-Saens’s effervescence carries its own authentic French nonchalance and understatement. He is notably successful in the thirds of Op. 111 No. 1 and in the transparent forerunner of Debussy’s ‘Pour les degres chromatiques’ (No. 2), a warm-hearted and masterly triumph of mind over matter. The recordings are excellent and Angelo Garino’s View of a Mediterranean Port provides an apt and charming cover.'

    Saint-Saëns's Études make ferociously virtuosic demands upon any pianist, but thankfully Piers Lane is more than up to the task, not least in the set of six studies for the left hand alone, which are so outstandingly played that I was often left wondering whether he cheated and used both hands on occasion! (I'm sure he didn't…)
