Recorded live in Rome before a polite audience - radio audiences always are - Current Conditions features what Enrico Pieranunzi has called "the trio of my heart", with Marc Johnson on bass and Joey Baron on drums.Track List
It also marks something of a change of direction, ora at least a broadening of his concers away from the deep vein of Romantic melancholia which he's been mining. This was apparent from last year's Enrico Pieranunzi tribute Play Morricone on the same label, which showed a new-found exuberance.
Most compositions are by Pieranunzi but there are also what I assume are two free improvvisations credited the three musicians, "Joey's Magic Tricks" and "Trio Reflections". Presented with these in a blidfold test, I don't think Pieranunzi would have been my first guess. Other pieces are more characteristic however.
As Ira Gitler aptly puts it in his sleevenote, the pianist presents the dance-like theme of the opening track. "How Can You not?2 as if it were an objet d'art which he is turning in his hands to fully display it. "Alle Rive Lontane" is one of Pieranunzi's many literary titles, from a poem by the French poet St. John Perse which means "dedicated to faraway shores"; it's one of those beautifully plangent minor-Key compositions which are so compelling.
The eerily effective "Simul" is taken from Old Latin for "togheter" - the pianist is fascinated by languages - and reflects the simultaneous major/minor tonality of one section, which Pieranunzi found generated surprising effects. The album also includes one piece by Joey Baron, "Broken Time", and Marc Johnson "Ravel's Walk", on which Pieranunzi comments that it's 2a musical situation instead of a tune" - a modal piece that draws on MIles davis' "So What".
Though I don't quite place Current Conditions on the level of the magnificent Play Morricone, it maintains a very high standard of improvisational freedom.
