A disc of music by the two most talented composers of seventeenth-century Austria and Bohemia is welcome and doubly so when the performances are as lively as these. Philip Pickett and his New London Consort have chosen a varied programme of pieces by Austrian Schmelzer and Bohemian Biber and while I would not advise anyone to listen uninterrupted to the entire disc, taken in sensible doses it should afford pleasure. Schmelzer was born in the 1620s, eventually attaining a position of the highest importance at the Vienna court. Biber was born in 1644 and in 1670 entered the service of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg, with whom he remained until his death in 1704. The programme assembled here is culled from various collections and publications and reflects an assortment of stylistic influences and range of colours and sonorities.
Much of the Schmelzer repertory was unfamiliar to me. It includes a charming Serenade in honour of the Emperor Leopold I, his employer and an eight-part Sonata, the most elaborate in a collection published in 1662 under the title Sacro-Profanus Concentus Musicus. Both pieces include parts for trumpets, violins, viols and continuo in which thematic ideas are engagingly exchanged. I found the Balletto di centauri, ninfe e salvatici engaging, too; it consists of four arias so-called—the term is used widely but loosely in this repertory and does not denote a specific type of piece—with clearly defined dance rhythms. But my attention wandered a little in a seven-part Sonata for as many recorders with continuo.
With Biber comes a greater degree of invention and fantasy to which he was able to give full rein in his 15 Mystery Sonatas for violin and continuo. There is nothing here, perhaps, which reaches a comparable musical level but Biber, nevertheless skilfully and unfailingly holds our attention with a deft deployment of varied instrumental groups and their contrasting colours. Among the pieces are a resonant seven-part Sonata for six trumpets and timpani, a more delicately wrought Sonata pro tabula and the fine nine-part Sonata Sancti Polycarpi. Performances throughout are stylish, technically polished and effectively recorded.
