At its première in June 1969 Shostakovich described his Symphony No. 14, in effect a symphonic song cycle, ‘a fight for the liberation of humanity…a great protest against death, a reminder to live one’s life honestly, decently, nobly…’ Originally intending to write an oratorio, Shostakovich set eleven poems on the theme of mortality, and in particular early or unjust death, for two solo singers accompanied by strings and percussion. This is the penultimate release in Vasily Petrenko’s internationally acclaimed symphonic cycle.

This is a sensational performance, the first that truly vies with the classic Rostropovich/Vishnevskaya/Reshetin for supremacy. Vasily Petrenko enjoys the distinct advantage of two absolutely fabulous young soloists. Soprano Gal James has a nice Slavic tang to her timbre (she is in fact Israeli), but with no attendant Slavic wobble and not a trace of shrillness. Her plaintive lyrical singing in The Suicide is as harrowing as her laughter in Madame, look! sounds diabolical. Baritone Alexander Vinogradov looks like he’s about 12, but he has a deep, rich voice that’s rock-steady and smooth as silk. Although he’s listed here as a baritone, he really has the range of a bass and the music’s lower passages give him no trouble. Like James, he has a tremendous expressive range, from the desolation of At the Santé Jail to the vicious insults of The Zaporozhian Cossacks’ Reply to the Sultan of Constantinople. With both singers you can understand the text so clearly that you could practically take dictation (assuming you wanted to). As for the conducting, Petrenko is more than gripping. This symphony, with its 11 poems about death, easily can become an exercise in gloom. But Shostakovich hated death; he feared it, but it also disgusted him. He reacted to these poems with visceral expressive power, and Petrenko captures every mood, from the feverish waltz of Malagueña, to the urgent yearning of O Delvig, Delvig! In Petrenko’s hands, we become supremely conscious of how Shostakovich achieves moments of exquisite beauty using the simplest of means–a wandering string line in De profundis or The Death of the Poet–or passages of sardonic humor with the militant rhythm of the tom-toms in On Watch. The sonics are crystal clear, and if the balances favor the voices, the singing is so superb that we can only welcome the attention. This is just stunning, one of the finest releases in what is already an exceptional cycle.

Review by David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com

However uncompromising its moral and ideological outlook, the self-evident musical distinction of Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony at once attracted the attention of recording teams East and West. Not all those early classics from the likes of Barshai, Ormandy, Gosman, Kondrashin, Rostropovich, Haitink and Bernstein are readily available in physical format but the good news is that Vasily Petrenko’s new disc, the penultimate instalment of his Naxos cycle, is up there with the best of them. I would not want to be without Rostropovich’s maximally emotive 1973 version with Galina Vishnevskaya and Mark Reshetin (last sighted on Warner Classics) yet Petrenko’s tighter, more direct manner has valid Soviet precedents of its own. The rhythmic precision of what sounds like a relatively small body of Liverpool strings is quite something and the high-voltage sense of forward movement is maintained throughout. The downside is that the snap and crackle of youthful enthusiasm occasionally seems to edge out deeper sentiments in the less physically demonstrative songs.

There is no coupling but with bold sound and detailed booklet-notes this would be a thrilling investment at any price. The texts are helpfully transliterated and we are not expected to rootle around for the translations online. Let’s not forget the singers’ fresh-sounding contribution. Alexander Vinogradov, oddly credited as a baritone, is one of those Russian basses whose rich, sepulchral tones, easily produced, belie a boyish frame. He can also be heard on Delphian’s Rachmaninov song compendium (reviewed last month). Gal James was a late stand-in. Even if her voice might be thought a tad undersized, she throws herself into the proceedings with striking commitment. Strongly recommended.
