Music Box is the 2006 CD by classical composer Paul Lansky. It's a mixture of contemporary classical pieces with electronic textures.
This CD, like much of Lansky's music, sounds nothing like what one would expect from a senior member of the composition faculty at Princeton. Lansky draws freely on music outside of academia, and many of the pieces here are clearly derived from popular styles, including hip-hop, rap, and techno. Even when the surface of the music sounds like something that could be heard on AM radio or a new age program, or uses rhythm tracks, Lansky's formidle compositional technique and restless inventiveness keep the music from being predictable.
The 10 pieces here show wide stylistic and emotional range, from the serene to the frenetic, but with more frenzy than serenity overall. In Wordless, one of the most striking pieces on the CD, nervous ostinatos alternate with broad calm melodies that are overlaid with sparkling, brittle, metallic arpeggios. Pavane Noir and Two by Two are gentle, elegiac meditations. B-O-B-O is a genuinely funny lop-sided dance with a whacked-out Nancarrow-like piano part. This collection should be of strong interest to fans of new music and electronic music, as well as anyone interested in the cross-pollination of new classical music with popular music, in which pop holds the upper hand.
