Progressive Death Metal / Technical Death Metal

An extremely technical death metal band from Munich, Germany, Obscura were founded in 2002 by vocalist/guitarist Steffen Kummerer, who purportedly took the name from a 1998 album by Canada's influential Gorguts – one of his inspirational touchstones, along with Cynic, Pestilence, Morbid Angel, and others. Kummerer spent the ensuing years composing the songs that would comprise Obscura's 2006 debut album, Retribution, bypassing the traditional extreme metal process of distributing demos and performing in clubs along the way. Even his supporting cast during the album sessions – guitarist Markus Lempsch, bassist Jonas Fischer, and drummer Jonas Baumgartl – were merely hired guns who would be subsequently dispensed with after its independent release to widespread rave reviews – so raving, in fact, that Kummerer and his pet project quickly became the objects of a metal label bidding war before signing with the highly respected Relapse Records for the release of the Obscura's second album, Cosmogenesis. This too met with overwhelmingly positive response within the metal community, and benefited from a new lineup of virtuosos including guitarist Christian Münzner and drummer Hannes Grossman, formerly of respected German techno-deathsters Necrophagist, plus legendary Pestilence bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling.

Obscura - Discography (2006 - 2011)

Relapse Records.

Progressive Death Metal / Technical Death Metal

Technical metal for the sake of being technical? That certainly could be a fitting summary of Germany's fleet-fingered metal act Obscura, who forgo anything resembling melody in favor of shredding and good old-fashioned noise – as evidenced throughout their debut album, Retribution, which was remastered/reissued by Relapse Records in 2010 (with a few bonus tracks tacked on). Retribution remains one fierce beast – full of so much stop-start riffing that those who are prone to motion sickness should proceed with the utmost caution. Add to it some oh-so-delightful death metal-esque vocals, and you have an album that is sure to please the most ardent extreme metal enthusiast. Looking for variety? You've come to the wrong place. But if you're looking for a pretty darn intense metallic attack from front to back, then Obscura's Retribution is worthy of some close inspection.

Guide Review - Obscura - 'Retribution'

Germany’s Obscura have turned quite a few heads with 2009’s Cosmogenesis, the band’s critically hailed second album, and the album that put Obscura on the map. So much notice has been given to Obscura with the release of Cosmogenesis that the band will soon embark on their debut tour of the U.S as support for The Black Dahlia Murder. With all of this in mind, and with an eye towards heavily promoting Obscura, Relapse Records is now reissuing a remastered version of Retribution, their debut full-length.
Originally released by Vots Records in 2006 (with atrocious cover art, I might add), Retribution is firmly planted in the era defined by the band’s obvious influences. Mid-period Death (think Human), bands such as Pestilence, Atheist, and, of course, Obscura-era Gorguts are the obvious template, as Retribution is a nice mix of brutality and progressive touches. This is technical death metal before the onslaught of arpeggios, breakdowns, and soulless technical wankery that is typical of what is labeled as technical death metal today.

From what information I can gather, the only remaining member of Obscura from the days of Retribution is founder/ vocalist/ guitarist Steffen Kummerer. However, the roster of Obscura, past and present, is a veritable who’s who of talented death metal artists from various German bands. The musicianship and songwriting present on Retribution is of a very high quality, much more so than that of a typical debut album.

Fast riffing interspersed with intricate melody is typical of the guitars on Retribution, and the pacing is generally fast with moments of groove. Progressive touches appear as slower moments of acoustical guitar, such as in “Sentiment”, a nice example of all that Obscura have to offer.

The original release of Retribution included 11 songs (including a cover of “Lack of Comprehension” by Death), and the reissue also includes two more covers (“Synthetically Revived” by Suffocation, and “God of Emptiness” by Morbid Angel). Thankfully, the awful cover art of the original release has been replaced with art featuring astronomical themes (right up my alley), similar to that of Cosmosgenesis.

Simply put, fans of '90s era progressive death metal cannot go wrong with this welcome reissue of Retribution from Obscura. Kudos to Relapse Records for the reissue and this album comes highly recommended.

Progressive Death Metal / Technical Death Metal

This album is a prime example of why technical death metal is superior to most other metal genres. That's normally not something I would say, considering most tech death bands (like Brain Drill) are just over-the-top and annoying with their technicality, and others just aren't heavy or interesting (like Decrepit Birth). But every once in a while, a really, really great tech death band will come along and blow my mind. So far, those bands have been Deeds of Flesh, Abysmal Dawn, The Faceless (post-Akeldama), and now Obscura. Cosmogenesis is Obscura's second full-length album, released last year on Relapse Records, and… wow. Just…

…wow.

The album starts off with "The Anticosmic Overload", probably one of the weakest songs on the album, yet still awesome, and yet it's the only song a video was made for… don't see how that works, but… I supposed it worked. It was (don't get me wrong) a great start to the album, but nothing particularly stands out about it, aside from the bass (which I'll delve into here in a moment). The riffs and solos here are great and prove this song to be a very nice appetizer for the meal that awaits. After the next song we come to "Universe Momentum", one of the better songs on the record, one that brings in quite a bit of random acoustic moments, which, upon mixed with the bass, sound very jazzy, and at other times remind me of Stormblast-era Dimmu Borgir, minus the black metal vocals. Overall, an awesome fucking song, one of the highlights of the album. Next up, we have "Incarnated". This is my personal favorite song on the album, but I'll talk more about it later, because a great deal of it revolves around the bass guitar. Right now, I'll just say that "Incarnated" is very dark and atmospheric, and flows quite nicely in with the next track, "Orbital Elements". This song is an instrumental that is very reminiscent of "The Call of Ktulu" by Metallica, which isn't a bad thing. Pretty much, you mix elements of "The Call of Ktulu", a little bit of "Hundred Wrathful Deities", (the Evile song released the same year), and a lot of Planetary Duality-era The Faceless, and you get "Orbital Elements". This is one of those tracks that stands out from the others. Skipping over "Desolate Spheres", we get to see the vocoder again in the songs "Infinite Rotation" and "Nospheres". "Nospheres" is one song that shows a slower, darker side to the album, (not that it wasn't already dark). Next, we come to the title track, which is probably the heaviest song here. It's not particularly "heavy", but it does incorporate more chugging riffs that'll get your head banging. Very awesome song. Finally, we come to another highlight of the album, the closing song, "Centric Flow". This song is actually pretty weak (once again, nothing really wrong with it, just nothing that really stands out), up until the halfway point, when it starts getting really amazing. That's around the time when the melody begins to kick in, and we hear an almost… well… I hate to say this when it comes to metal, but… a beautiful acoustic and melodic solo section, very reminicient of "Perennial Quest" from Death. After this we come to another melodic riff, in which we can hear the vocalist rasp "THIS IS… THIS IS… THIS IS THE CENTRIC FLOW!", in a way that sent a chill down my spine. An amazing end to an amazing album.

One of the things that turned me on to this band (and ultimately this album) was the video for "The Anticosmic Overload", in which I witnessed something I had never seen before… a bassist who uses a 6-string fretless bass. A special bass that can be heard throughout the album, (that's right, you can hear the bass throughout 100% of the album), and gives Obscura an awesome style that so far hasn't been topped by any other band I've heard. For a fretless bass, I'm astounded at how extremely well the bassist plays it. Flawlessly. Perfectly. And it sounds purely incredible. The single-most awesome song on the album (made awesome by the bass and the riffs), is "Incarnated", a song that has a melodic edge to it, but a dark verse that features what is probably the coolest bass pattern in any metal song period. The bass goes a completely different route than the guitar, creating a mesmerizing, definitely Area 51 themed sound. It's pretty awesome to experience. We're dealing with one of the most talented bassists in metal here. We should be honored.

Now I'll shut up about the bass already and move on to the guitars themselves. The great production plays a key part here, as every single note is perfectly audible. The guitarists here aren't just playing around. They know what they're doing and why they're doing it. You can go from a faster, more technical side, such as in "The Anticosmic Overload" and "Desolate Spheres", to a slower, heavier, more dark, mystic side, in songs like "Nospheres" and the title track "Cosmogenesis". Of couse, as I've mentioned before, there are plenty of acoustic, jazzy, and creepy interludes like those in "Universe Momentum" and "Infinite Rotation". The riffs and solos throughout the album are incredible, but I'd have to say the most memorable is the last half of "Centric Flow", obviously the most melodic, phenomenal moments on this record.

I'm not much of a drumming expert, but I will say that the drummer knows what to do when. Of course, this is a key factor to all forms of metal, when to play fast, when to slow down, when to build up, and when to go all out crazy. This guy knows what he's doing, along with the rest of the band.

And finally, I want to briefly talk about the vocals. Throughout the record you'll hear a wide range of vocal styles, ranging from an almost black metal rasp that reminds me of David Vincent on the first two Morbid Angel albums, to a Symbolic-era Chuck Shuldiner style. His lows remind me very much of Demon Carcass from The Faceless in their album Planetary Duality, as do the vocoder sections in "Choir of Spirits" and "Nospheres", the latter having a vocoder outtro that sounds very much like the outtro to "The Ancient Covenant" by The Faceless. At some points, he'll even use a clean vocal style (no, don't worry, nothing even remotely like the screamo clean vocals that sound like they haven't gone through puberty yet), these clean vox sound matured and very fitting with the music, just adding to the pure amazing-ness that is this album.

Highlights: The whole thing, really. The only songs that aren't up there with the rest are "Choir of Spirits" and "Desolate Spheres", and even those songs are fucking awesome. The record gets a well-deserved 100%, and plenty of future listens.

In my opinion, this album sounds like a mix between The Faceless' 2008 album Planetary Duality and Death's 1995 album Symbolic. And to me, this album is right up-to-par with Symbolic as one of the best metal albums ever written. I know that may be a bit of an overstatement to some, but… just go buy it and give it a listen. You'll know what I mean.

A Necrophagist?

Progressive Death Metal / Technical Death Metal

In 2006, every metal band should have just stopped trying. Okay, so maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration but it’s not too far off from the truth. For five years now, the band known as Obscura has been steadily chugging along, reinventing what some believe to be one of the weakest genres in metal. With protesters pointing out the lack of song development, the repetitive structure and not to mention the almost self-serving masturbatory guitar shredding that tech metal has to offer, it’s easy to see why people could get turned off. Even as a fan of the subgenre myself, I can’t help but sometimes get tired of the same old song and dance routine. However, any and all short comings that people often times attribute to tech metal should ultimately be destroyed upon listening to Ominvium, Obscura’s third full length album.

Omnivium is very reminiscent of 2009’s Cosmogenesis. With the same trademark sound, intricate bass lines and song structure, it’s almost as if their new album picks up right where the last one left off. The difference here is most definitely found in the band’s maturity level. The band stuck with what worked for Cosmogenesis while branching off to try new and less traditional instruments, styles and approaches—things that a younger Obscura would not have dared to attempt. One of the biggest changes is the addition of the acoustic guitar that can be found making appearances throughout the album. From the first notes of the album to periodic usage in songs such as “Prismal Dawn”, it’s easy to see the band is expanding. Coupled with unique vocoder effects and a plethora of other tiny intricacies, Omnivium sees Obscura taking their music to a whole other level—a level that I am not sure anyone knew existed.

The album kicks off with “Septuagint”, the second longest song on the album and right from the get-go you are greeted with the acoustic element of this album. It’s more of a calm before the storm, because it isn’t long before the band kicks it into high gear and pummels you with endless waves of blast beats, guitar shredding and otherworldly vocals. However, being the experienced and mature musicians that they are, it isn’t long before the band breaks up the tech metal with a solo…a bass solo! Yes, you read that right; Omnivium could be one of the few albums ever made in the world of metal to feature a bass solo, let alone a bass solo on the first track pretty much right out the gate. It’s impressive too! With a slower tempo than the rest of the track, the bass kicks in with a jazz-like quality that only Jeroen Paul Thesseling could properly pull off. Around the corner is another smack in the face; the band follows the bass solo with a melodic bridge and clean singing vocals. The outcome is a tech metal song that actually is…well…a song.

The whole album keeps you on your toes, with surprises at every turn. From the sliding bass lines in “Ocean Gateways”, to the periodic interludes that are found in the middle of various songs, there is literally something here for everyone. Not one song sounds like the other but instead each one stands apart, giving the listener the ability to either listen to the album throughout, or pick and choose songs at will; either way, the listener will not be disappointed. And the guitar solos, let’s not forget about the guitar solos! Steffen Kummerer and Christian Müenzner are some of the best in the biz̬true virtuosos with their weapons—who can go from fast and furious to melodic and beautiful at the drop of a hat. The guitar work on this album almost has a “na na na boo boo, I am better than you” kind of feeling to it, with both Steffen and Christian taking turns proving their worth on the guitar. Solos can be just a few seconds or almost the entire song, as evident by “A Transcendental Serenade”; either way, it’s a treat to hear these guys go at it.

The guys in this band are great musicians on their own but together they make an unstoppable force in the world of tech death. If you are a fan, were a fan or have never been a fan of Obscura, this is the album for you. In my opinion, it can do no wrong and should be a prerequisite lesson for any younger bands trying to make a name for themselves in the tech metal movement. Everyone pull out a pen and paper and take notes, because this will certainly be on the test.
