After the demise of the original Nuvole di Paglia Franco Serena formed the Serena Rock Band with drummer Al Corvara, while Mauro Periotto played with the Free Jazz ensemble Organico Musica Creativa Improvvisata.In early-90'd though Serena and Periotto reformed Nuvole di Paglia with guitarist Alberto Gally and drummer Davide Zanetti and propably this was the reason for Mellow Records to release the 70's archive work ''Live '73'' in 1993.The next year the fresh line-up released the album ''And Then…'' with reworked old pieces and new compositions, featuring guest appearances by original members Sandro Sarda and Al Corvara and Le Orme's leader Aldo Tagliapietra.This was again a product of Mellow Records.
The album has nothing to do with the bad recordings of ''Live '73'' and features an excelent and clear production full of Hard Rock pieces with a fair dose of Blues Rock and guitar-based Prog thrown in for good measure.And while the album has little to offer from a prog point of view, it contains extremely solid rockin' musicianship all the way.Propably a good reason is new guitarist Alberto Gally and his magnificent rhythmic parts, complex hooks and mind-blowing heavy solos.Another good reason is that four out of nine tracks are sung in Italian, adding the band this unique Italian flavor, despite the style sounding rather American in terms of music.The rhythm section is confident all the way, Serena's voice is aggressive with an interesting hoarse color, while the tracks feature also some good organ parts and even some Mellotron in the second cut ''Love Me So In The Rain''.Memorable choruses and intense bluesy instrumental themes are also in the menu and the work sounds quite complete as a result.
After the album Franco Serena continued performing with Serena Rock Band, while he also followed a career as a painter and even two of his works are used among the inlet of this release.
Not the main priority for a Prog Rock fan, but I can't help but finding all these Hard Rock tunes from interesting to even impressive.Recommended to all fans of standard 70's-influences Hard Rock with a nice dose of complex guitar parts.by apps79, rateyourmusic.com
